Simple "effective" advice fo all homeschoolers:
Go under an umbrella program for about $100.00 / year
and keep your mouth shut!

Speaking for St. Mary's

I only homskuled (haha) through the middle school years and no; it does not NEED to be a mom or dad. I was unable to teach Algebra so I paid a tutor to teach that subject.

What they are primarily looking for is that a "grade level" curriculum is being taught and you have the childs work to prove it. St. Mary's will "audit" your portfolio about 1x year.

Hoevr itis mak shore thay no howe too spill.

You must be referring to the public school "spill".

Spill the drugs before you're caught
or
Spill some blood to make it look like you got punched first
or
Spill your guts on what is going on at home e.g. guns, spankings etc!

I have a friend who home schools and she has offered to do it. I have a feeling the pulic schools here aren't very supportive of homeschooling in general.

The Public Schools could'nt care less! Once you home school it is out of their hands.

Maybe the case! Seems like the couple times I have mentioned it they are quick to say they don't think it's the way to go....

You have to be 100% on time before you consider Home Schooling. You could literally send your kids back!

Personally I wouldn't put that in anyone elses hands.

No and that's pathetic.

Why is that pathetic? If you do some research, Southern MD has a fairly extensive homeschool network. Many parents pool together to teach varying subjects to include math, foreign languages, music etc.

If you think public schools are the end all be all of education, then that right there is fairly myopic and pathetic.

Wouldn't it be better for the parents to find someone smarter if they felt they couldn't do a good enough job? I mean, parents hire tutors for their kids all the time. Is that any different?

Nevermind. I read her post as her asking if the mom and dad had to be a teacher. This is why I haven't been posting much lately. I can't think straight. Carry on.

Why yes, yes I do. Thanks for the comment. No seriously. We use Penn-Foster online High school. They are legitimate, he will get a diploma and a class ring and he will have a real graduation. Although we have to travel to PA for the graduation, it will be worth it. We pay just 40.00 a month and he has a 95 average and is working on Physics as we speak. Much better for him to have the one on one working environment.

There are more advantages than disadvantages to homeschooling. No bullies, no drama, no designer handbags etc... Our kids SOARED when we kept them home the 3 years of middle school. We re-built their confidence that was beaten down not only by foolish kids but by teachers/classes they were struggling with. It's allot easier to learn US History when you have a bigger "block" of time to explain it rather than between the bells.

Yes, there is a HUGE network between St. Mary's and Calvert for Homeschoolers and you can start at the public library and it's website. The first month we did it, I was kinda lost but eventually you pick up a pattern and it works for all. Like I last posted; if you don't think your able to teach a certain subject, you can find a tutor or you can even do small groups with other homeschoolers and use their mom/dad/tutor. That way the child has other child interaction. Our kids chose to go back to school so we let them decide when they wanted to and it was a very smooth transition. It was harder for me than them. Then went onto High School & College and EXCELLED.

Plus I'm gratefull that I had that time with them. It was allot of fun and I was blessed to be in a position that I could even bring them to work since I own my own business. Part of their curriculum was (business math) also.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

Untrue. You have to fill a form out each year to tell them you are home schooling. They then send you a letter back with the laws of the state and also the policy statement of the Board of Education were they state "The Board of Education of St. Mary's County believes that the best possible education that can be provided to students is in the public schools."

I think that pretty much sums it up on where they stand. You also have to meet with them at least once a year to go over the work your child has done. You can join an umbrella group if you don't want to do that. The reviewers I have met have been very nice.

Aren't you doing that when you send them to public school?
