I'm going to get Verizon DSL in about 3-5 days!

I've been stuck on dial-up for months, and finally I can get some higher upload/download speeds.

But, it wasn't easy at first! David had told me that DSL was available at a decent price, so I Googled Verizon.com, and they asked for my phone # to check for availablity.

The check came back saying it wasn't available in my area, and they would advise me when it would be.

Yesterday, 2 guys in a Verizon van were installing new equipment near my house, and I stopped one of them and asked how far away the terminal box was from this area.

The man said you should already be qualified for it, the box is 1 1/2 miles down the road, and the limit is 3 miles, so you should be able to get it.

He said to call the regional office and have them check it; that the website may not be up to date.

He was right!

I called them, confirmed it, and ordered the new equipment(modem free of charge), just the monthly cost added to my phone bill.

Whoopee!

I really hate to do this and I hope you get it....BUT...I signed up for it about a year ago and everything was fine according to them....I got my modem, all my instructions, software etc etc etc....Loaded everything up and I couldn't get it to run so I called for help....They told me I was too far away from the terminal box....They sent me an address label so I could send everything back....Bummer....About a month ago I did the same thing and the assured me that I was OK this time...Well guess what....Yep too far away again....They will notify me when I am close enough....I really do hope you get it though....

I am so tired of dial-up; it takes forever for anything to load, and I'm not even talking about music or pics.

Hey Penn, what's the cost and what speed are you going to get out of it. :confused:I was thinking about switching over to DSL or Comcast, but Comcast wants $40 a month for it. Don't think I want it that bad.

Thumbs up, Penn. I am also eagerly awaiting DSL and hope it's available soon. I had broadband in my previous house and moved in May. Going back to dial-up once you've had broadband is rather tedious.

I haven't got it yet Vince, but I talked to a rep on the phone, and she said I'd get at least 360 to 400 kps, whick is 9 to 10 times faster than I have right now.

And it's only $7.00 more than I'm payng for dial-up.

It's a toll-free call to Beltsville Md, 301-954-6260; you can order the service as I did then and there, IF it's available.

Cost per month, as I was told is $29.95, and if you have Verizon as your phone service provider, it will appear on your monthly bill.

Good luck!

I do about 49.2 kps now with my dial up....I sure wish I could get it....With my dial up fee and my extra line it would actually be cheaper....I guess that's the price ya pay for living in da boonies.... :dead:

Yes, and as an extra, you can still use your phone to dial out while connected to DSL, the rep told me.

They used to charge for the modem, but now it's free as an incentive, too.

360 - 400kps isn't blazing speeds, but it's going to be faster than what I have.

Depends on whether or not you have Verizon phone service (discount).

I'm about a quarter mile away from the box, so mine's a bit quicker than most. IIRC, I have about 128kb/s upload and over 1mb/s download. I can check again tonight when I get home.

I've been paying for this service every month this year but then they said there's no local number and AOL still charges me for it... then one day I went to download a special AOL feature that I wanted and it denied me access because it was not suited for broadband users... ::ohwell: Thanks for the reminder... seeing's how I'm paying for it... I'll check to see if they have a local number yet...

I just called them and they said that it doesnt come down as far as my house. But they are changing all the lines to fiberoptics and that way everyone will be able to get it. And all of the change over is supposed to start in January. So maybe soon, we will see. :dead:
