Two things.
First, the easiest way to take care of lower hornet nests. After dark put on everything you would to go out in the snow. Tape all areas with duct tape. Take a trash bag and walk up to the nest. Put the open end over the nest and close. Leave in the sun a few days.
Second, yellow jackets. Pour gas into the hole at night. DO NOT LIGHT! The fumes of the gas will kill them while they sleep. If you light it they start to fly out.
