what is the best way to get rid of them without going to the vet? I right now am just trying to keep her from making them any worse than they already are by keeping her from licking them.

You better take her to the vet, she's going to keep at it and infect them, then she'll need an antibiotic.

I know of a fantastic product that you can order on-line that will take care of them quickly. I would love to share the name of it with you for half of the price that it will cost you for a vet appt.

scissor the hair from around it and keep it dry. Don't use clippers it makes them worse in my opinion and the hair can come back in a different color.

:twitch: So you cannot do anything simple with her without being afraid of being bit? It sounds like a very unstable dog or unstable handler to me, maybe both.

no its not that. her hind leg is really red and inflamed and she doesn't want me getting near it as it hurts her.

Right so it became a hotspot and inflamed just overnight?
If it is so sore just from a few nightime hours, how do you know she will try and bite you? Did she already try and bite you this morning then when you "just" discovered it?

hotspots just dont "SHOW UP"..... they fester under the fur for a while as they do not have adequate air circulation due to many reasons.....
dirty dog not being bathed regularly
dog not being groomed regularly
mats on dog not being removed
undercoat on dog not being removed

and the list goes on....

if the hotspot is this bad... the dog needs meds as she has an underlying skin infection that will not clear up on its own. AND THE DOG NEEDS AND E-COLLAR THAT HAS TO BE WORN 24/7 TO PREVENT HER FROM CHEWING OR LICKING AT IT ANYMORE

god... how hard is this

That's why I said take her to the vet because knowing jp it's already reached the point of infection.

I think you all need to quit calling me a bad pet owner. As I am far from it. My animals get the best care around. I was just curious if there was anything I could do til I got her into the vets that was it. she goes on friday to get the 2 spots taken care of and I will follow the treatment plan the vet puts her on. I don't think I will be asking for anymore help from you all as I hate being put in as the worst pet owner in the world when I am far from it. My animals are part of my family (they are my furchildren).

have a seat there SPARKY.... I really dont care to know what you are doing with her... not my dog... really not my problem :coffee:

you are the one that PM'ed me before you posted this inquiring about hotspots....

I gave you info... I gave you my recommendations.. as everyone else has.
its up to YOU to do with them as you please.

I treat hotspots EVERY WEEKEND..... Im just telling you what causes them...
......... and depending on "how recently she was groomed" could be a cause also... if there was a heavy spot of undercoat that stayed wet for a longer about of time and could not dry all the way because air could not circulate... BINGO.... HOTSPOT.

I have been there myself with that type of hotspot... but I was able to catch it early, treat it early because my dog is not aggressive to me, nor am I afraid of my own dog. My dog knows who is in charge and if there is EVER any question about that... I will be sure to let them know that moment. :coffee:
Good luck and Please make sure you follow your vets recommendations to a "T"... and do yourself and your dog a big favor...invest in an E-collar!!

JP - I think your discriptions are bad. Sorry, but it isn't easy with out seeing the dog. It is a small spot or the hind leg? Is it just red and itchy, or is it crusty? If crusty is it white, yellow, green, clear? A pic would be great. You say she was groomed recently, how recent? Could this be from that? Dogs and skin conditions are really hard to say as they can be allergy, improper care, stings, injury, and a lot of other things. Try googling discriptions and see if you can find a image of what you are seeing and find out what it maybe then you can take that and see what the options are for treatment. However, anything you do without a vet's help is not always safe, but you can judge that based on what you find. Just trying to help you find what you are looking for. Even if you do nothing your searches will have a good base to talk to the vet about on Friday.
