I think you all need to quit calling me a bad pet owner. As I am far from it. My animals get the best care around. I was just curious if there was anything I could do til I got her into the vets that was it. she goes on friday to get the 2 spots taken care of and I will follow the treatment plan the vet puts her on. I don't think I will be asking for anymore help from you all as I hate being put in as the worst pet owner in the world when I am far from it. My animals are part of my family (they are my furchildren).
I was just wondering if there is something like CPS for dogs?
Noted 9/22/10 JP said she would not ask for anymore help for her poor dog.
I believe you were told last year what to do, go reread that thread. Also you can try and bluff your way around most people but, most people on here are aware that hotspots do not happen just over night. Maybe if you had been brushing her like you are supposed to you would have noticed something going on with her.
My dog has them also, and he doesn't like for me to clean them, he try's to bite me as well. Usually have to get hubby or son help me with him while doing it.I will try to do this later today when I can get some help with her so I don't get bit.
Call the vet and tell them that her leg is very hot and inflammed. They should be able to help you out.
I wouldn't try to treat it myself becuase an infection can come up pretty fast.
Here are some things you can do in the future if another hot spot appears. Shave the hair around the wound with clippers or at least a pair of scissors. The wound needs air to breath. Keep it clean a couple times a day with water and peroxide 50/50. Pat dry, and if the wound is not oozing with infection, you can apply gold bond powder on it to help keep it dry. It contains zinc which really helps. Get an E collar to stop your dog from irritating it further. Hotspots spread fast and your dog needs to leave it alone. Unfortunatly, when they get infected, antibiotics are needed.
Sometimes it is hard to find the exact cause, whether its a skin allergy, food allergy, insect bite, flea bite, etc.

Poor dog. It'd be more humane to take it to the animal shelter and have it put down.
Could be worse... At least the dog isn't covered in ticks and roaming the streets, or chained to a tree barking all night and covered head to toe in mange like so many of the dogs around here.... Just saying.
what is the best way to get rid of them without going to the vet? I right now am just trying to keep her from making them any worse than they already are by keeping her from licking them.
