House Democrats ask Trump administration which gun dealers sell most firearms tied to crime

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the committee’s chairman, made the request in a letter sent to Regina Lombardo, acting deputy director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The request comes in the wake of two weekend mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which left at least 31 people dead.

“The Committee is gravely concerned that current law enforcement efforts are not adequately addressing this crisis,” Cummings wrote in the letter. “The Committee is seeking to better understand enforcement efforts with respect to [federal firearms licensees] that sell large numbers of guns that are used in crimes, including homicides. This investigation will inform Congress’s ability to make changes in federal law that save lives.”

Multiple calls to the ATF were not returned. A spokesperson for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Federal Firearms licensees are following the law and the homicides in Baltimore are not being committed with legally bought weapons from licensed dealers. I might add that the weapons used in Mass shootings are not large numbers of firearms , but in most cases are one gun. Now the shooting in Las Vegas where the shooter had several weapons is clothed in mystery and we haven't heard much about it , Wonder why?

Anyway Cummings is a joke, a bad joke, a clown, and if calling that idiot a clown is racist---tough sh1t.

I know there have been a handful of dealers operating of their homes, making illegal sales caught in the past and faced legal / criminal prosecution ....


The Brady Campaign claims 90% of the Guns used in Crimes are traced back to 5% of the dealers ....

Where did this stat come from? The Brady Campaign cites figures in a 15 year old ATF report, “Commerce in Firearms in the United States, February 2000.” The Brady Campaign has for just as long knowingly misinterpreted the ATF’s trace data in this report. In fact, the unsuccessful Brady Campaign-backed municipal lawsuits that sought to drive the industry into bankruptcy in this period were predicated on the misuse and distortion of ATF trade data.

The fact that a small share of licensed retailers account for a large share of gun traces cannot legitimately be interpreted to mean that any of these retailers did anything wrong, such as knowingly selling guns to traffickers or their straw-purchaser associates. First, just because a trace led law enforcement back to a retailer does not indicate whether there was any illegal or improper activity on the part of the retailer. The traced gun may have been legally sold to an eligible buyer, later stolen, perhaps re-sold on the street, used in a crime and recovered by police.

ATF acknowledges this by cautioning in reports that, “ATF emphasizes that the appearance of a Federal firearms licensee (FFL) or a first unlicensed purchaser of record in association with a crime gun [i.e. traced gun] or in association with multiple crime guns [i.e. traced guns] in no way suggests that either the FFL or the first purchaser has committed criminal acts.”

Even if there are many firearms traced back to a single retailer, it’s not safe to assume you’re looking at a “bad apple.” For one thing, the most successful retailers have the highest volume of sales to eligible buyers. This means a larger number of firearms are circulating that could be stolen and later used in a crime. As even anti-gun researcher Garen J. Wintemute shows, even the most law-abiding and ethical dealer can have high trace counts solely if he sells many guns.

ATF echoes this in a 2003 press release that notes, “It is misleading to suggest that a gun dealer is corrupt because a large percentage of the guns sold in his store are subsequently used in crime. Many other factors – including high volume of sales, the type of inventory carried and whether the gun is located in a high crime area – contribute to the percentages cited by the Brady campaign.”

One thing the gun control crowd doesn’t mention is that the average “time to crime,” or the time span between when a traced firearm was legally purchased and when it was used in a crime, is about 11 years.

I’d be surprised if they could find one dealer knowingly selling large numbers of guns that are used in crimes, including homicides
Cummings and his ilk need a leash to stop calling for investigations on whims.

Both disingenuous and dangerous for anyone concerned about personal liberty.

In addition to the obvious gun grabbing, where would this end?

"Gravely concerned with supermarkets selling things that cause diabetes?"

"Gravely concerned about liquor stores selling booze that is involved in DUI death causing accidents?"

"Gravely concerned about medical marijuana shops selling dope that causes buzz-related work place accidents?"

"Gravely concerned with cell phone manufacturers due to deaths caused by texting while driving?"

We already have it with school districts claiming educational dominance over families. We already have it with doctors denying parents roles in their children's health care.

Cummings' "grave concern" is a dangerous, puritanical, naked power-grab. He (and all his friends, Dems and Repubs) should go back to where he came (they come) from, fix the problems at home, and come back and tell us how he (they) did. And if successful, tell us how he (they) did it.

I think after Trump the next Democratic Administration is going to go full tilt Authoritarian using the Gov. to destroy ANY business they do not like or cannot tax heavily
