House numbers in St. Mary's

Please correct me if I am wrong but when they changed it to a 5 number address wasn't that so each house would have it's own number? I live in a townhouse and there is another townhouse with the same house number. The only difference in the address is that one is at lower street and the other upper. I get her packages quite often and I can understand why.

Shouldn't the addresses be 11111-A & 11111-B?? Different unit numbers?

Nope. They are 55667 Upper Ct. and 55667 Lower Ct (just an example).

There can be and are the same numbers on varying streets. What really changed was that there wouldn't be two or more streets with the same name and I'm not even sure that worked as what was planned.

Well it's like 4 rows of townshouses. But they are all in the same circle road. I could see if they were down the street but these to people who don't know seem to be off the same road. I thought it was so you could call 911 and give them your house number and it would be unique. I would have to explain it's the townhouses in the back...

We have the same problem within our neighborhood with a same house number that is on a different street. Not too big of a problem, just getting some mail here and there, but we also got a violation from the HOA that was supposed to go to the other address a couple of weeks ago.

Thought the numbers wer unique per street name.
Does anyone else have problems getting other's mail? We constantly get mail for other houses, not necessarily nearby. That may be the reason we get mail and publications late.

Numbers cant be unique per street name, streets are suppose to be unique although some are sometimes dupilcated within a county. If numbers were unique for each street what a nightmare it would be for police and fire to find a house, thats where 911 addressing really helped. Also would be very helpful if everyone would put their address out on the mailbox or up on the house or at the end of the drive makes it alot easier to find in the middle of the night when you call for help, could be a life or death situation and say the ambulance is going back and forth on dark road looking for the right house or driveway to turn in, I know from experience cause, Im driving that ambulance.

Thats exactly what I thought OldHillcrestGuy. I would have to go I live at this address but go into detail that it is the 3 level ones with metal stairs. I have the address displayed as does everyone because of the HOA. The other house with the same number has theirs covered by a bush.

If that was the case, then there could only be 99,999 houses, apartments, townhouses, trailers, and businesses in the county.

What difference does it make if the street address is different? It doesn't. It's not like there's going to be another 12345 Lower Ct. in Great Mills.

All I wanted to know is if they were suposed to be unique. In my specific case you can't even tell your on another street so it becomes very confusing.

I don't think they are unique, since I get the wrong mail a lot.

Relax...

It'll all be fixed next year when they convert everything to the new Hexadecimal Addressing System.

Your new street address will go from 62755 Oaktree Ct. to F523 FB62D729AA EA.

With the 911 addressing system the county uses a standard grid system on a map and all homes that fall in the grid are given certain numbers. They can be 4 or 5 digits but they try to group all the 10000 and 1000 in one area and all the 20000 and 2000 in another. All street names should be unique and not duplicated anywhere else in the same county. There are some subdivisions in Charles County that have as many as 5 to 6 duplicate numbers on different streets. What a nightmare for the mailman!! I'm sure that is the problem you are experiencing. Some carriers case by street numbers and don't double check the street names. Sorry for your troubles!

They need to check both. We've been having this problem ever since they changed the numbers. The house on the next street over has the same 5 digits we do (street names are completely different), and we are constantly getting each others mail. It's a real pain. Twice we've gotten packages of theirs, and tons of other mail. We've been carrying the mail back and forth, but the last time we got some junk mail for them I left it in the box with a note for the mailman saying right number, wrong street.

I have talked to the postmaster about it a couple of times, but there's always an excuse (the carrier is on vacation and the new person made the error, etc). This is one of the reasons we have a PO box. We get all our important mail (bills, bank statements, direct deposit receipts, etc) there. The only thing we can't get at the PO box is rebates, since you have to use a street address. We had a bunch of rebates due back after Christmas, and I just hoped they would make it here okay.
