Housing in SOMD

Trying to rent a place to live in SOMD is getting quite ridiculous. If you dont earn a high income from working on PAX or if you dont have a section 8 voucher you are pretty much screwed. The rents are out of control and cater only to those two groups. Even houses in San Succi are renting for 1150-1800 dollars a month. If your not in one of those groups your outta luck finding reasonable rents.

I wouldn't call it being catered to that the mortgage on my townhouse is more than 5x higher than the rent was on my last apartment on the west coast. I still call it getting robbed.

Um, I work on PAX and can't afford the rent on some of the places in this area. So I wouldn't say they cater to us. Maybe a 2 income family, which is what most landlords want.

you have to be willing to look outside the immediate area surrounding the base. When I rented a few years ago I had two GREAT properties for very reasonable prices.

Have you considered looking in to homes that are for sale that have been sitting on the market for awhile? You could possibly contact an agent/owner and make a rental offer?

And yes, it is expensive here. Be sure to factor in your winter heating costs too

I feel ya pain. I'm a single mother. The housing sucks for single family incomes.

What's your budget?

Been lucky with two nice places too. Relatively low rent IMO, (1000-1200) for large, very nice townhomes. Nice places, nice neighborhoods. Found both on here, but you gotta act quick. They get snatched up fast.

Using a realtor and making offers to those that have been on the market for awhile is a good idea. Especially given the economy. Good luck!

And it only gets worse when you go over the bridge into Calvert county. In the last couple of weeks I have seen advertisements for a ROOM in someones home for $800/month, and a 1 bedroom basement apartment for $1400. I have a mortgage on a newly built 2200 sq foot house in Washington state for slightly more than $1400 a month. This area is ridiculous and for the money you pay for housing here, the amenities are few.

Been thinking about the houses that I have seen empty for a long time around the area especially in san soucci, its hard to find a contact person/number and also wonder about the condition since they have been sitting awhile.

I'm getting $0.75/SF for my cheaper rentals and $0.90/SF for the nicer ones. My lowest profit margin is $400/month- this housing crash and low interest rates have been a gold mine if in the right spot! My rose color glasses are fogging up just thinking about it..

This home has been on the market for a long time. I suspect that the condition of the home across the street might be at least one reason

I knew the family who used to rent it. I have heard that the owner is nice
