How do you change your political affiliation?

Like if you are a Republican and want to be independent now. Anybody ever done this and if so how did you go about it?

I just renewed my license and they offered to do it at the DMV. I said, "I no longer care what party I'm affiliated with because I'm not living in PG or Baltimore my vote DOES NOT COUNT."

I think if you fill out a voter registration and don't select D or R, you are officially independent.

I'm listed as independent but that's what I put when I registered when I moved here BUT I just changed my name and had to get a new voter's card recently. It said on the paper that if I wanted to make changes to anything on my card to fill out the back and send it in.

Here's the link for the paper to change your party information:

How do I affiliate with a political party?

You have the option to register with any of Maryland's recognized political parties. If you do not choose to register with a party, you will be considered as "Unaffiliated." If registered as unaffiliated, you will generally not be able to vote in primary elections, but you will be able to vote in any nonpartisan primary election held in your jurisdiction, such as a primary election to select nominees for the board of education.

May I change parties?

Party affiliation impacts a Primary election where you must be affiliated with a principle party in order to participate in the election. Once the primary election is over, there are no party affiliation deadlines, only voter registration deadlines. The deadline for the upcoming Primary election is Tuesday, March 13, 2012. You certainly may change your party affiliation after the Primary election, however, it will not impact the ballot you receive on General election day.

I contacted the Board of Elections, and they sent me a form. I filled it out and mailed it back and then they sent me my new card in the mail about a week later. Hope this helped:)

I called the County Board of Elections and the wonderful lady there emailed me a form to fill out, and I sent it back to her and had a new card within a week.

In My Opinion
^This^ It was effortless to finally blow off the Republicans.

I also took my name off of the "give my soul to a specific party" lists and went unaffilliated, however I think it was easier for me than it was for you. I only had to fill out the change thing. Didnt have to do anything in person.

I think the blowing the Republicans part was just sarcasm.

E-Mail the local election office with your name and DOB, along with what party you are with, and what you want to change to.

I know I had to do this because I couldn't vote in the Republican Primary as an Independent.

Stop @ the post office and get a voter registration card. Fill it out & drop it in the mail. Easy peasy.

I changed to unaffiliated a few years ago. Shortly after that, I received a jury duty notice in the mail. Coincidence??

Thanks everybody....I sent off my "change" form yesterday afternoon. I don't know if it will be in time to vote though.

You've got plenty of time if you were registering for the first time. If you were just changing your party affiliation, it has no affect on your ability to vote in November.
