How food becomes a thing

Oatmeal, for instance. When did it be that oatmeal is a sweet breakfast, usually with brown sugar or fruit or honey to flavor it? Yet grits, which are just oatmeal with corn instead of oats, is a savory hot dish - with cheese and bacon, etc.

I like my oatmeal with scrambled eggs and maybe a breakfast meat. I almost never do anything to make it sweet. But that is outside the norm. Sometime in the past, it was decided that oatmeal should be sweetened and now that's how the majority of people eat it.

So that's all. I'm just wondering who decides these things and why.

Also, I love breakfast foods but many times I'll eat whatever's left over from last night's dinner for breakfast. So who decided that eggs, cereal, etc, were breakfast foods, and spaghetti or meatloaf isn't?

It's just a matter of what you find appealing or not. Single and college students have no problem horking down anything they can find first thing in the morning. I've been know to have a slice of pizza or two at 7am, but meatloaf or baked beans is just unappealing to me at that hour.

But interestingly enough I can find breakfast foods appealing at any time of the day or night. Pancakes for dinner with a side of sausage.

I love having "breakfast" for dinner. Used to be one of my favorites when I was a kid. Pancakes, sausages, homefries, warm maple syrup and butter. Now I'm hooked on corned beef hash, can eat it anytime!

Look up fried oatmeal sometime, it's kind of like a vegetarian scrapple.

BTW.... my favorite homefries now, when I don't want to take the time to make my own, is leftover fries from 5 Guys. They always overfill the bag, so I take them home and throw them in the fridge. Cut them into cube size and throw them on the griddle with some Crisco or butter and brown them up good until crispy. Quick, easy and :yum:

We don't eat there often, but when we do, we sometimes do that and maybe add a little onion and green pepper. :yay:
