How old do you have to be to not be a child?

Getting tired of seeing these 17-18 year olds being called children. There are a good portion of us out here that had adult lives at these ages. At 17 and some months I'd graduated and moved to Alaska, several people I know had joined the military by then. So what's the childhood cutoff? I'd call them just young men and women.

Pretty much, still in school as a starting point. Beyond that, not supporting yourself and taking care of yourself like an adult. Men and women take care of themselves and their business.

noun
noun: child; plural noun: children

a son or daughter of any age.

you forgot part of that definition let me post it for you

an immature or irresponsible person.

See why I ask, are these "children" immature or irresponsible? That's how I'm reading it.

Well, you might say engaging in magical thinking is the key, but soooooo many adults engage in that so that doesnt work. I dont look to the victim of a plane crash on how to make planes safer, I dont look to the victim of a mugging to tell me how to prevent muggings. Ask people who have avoided being mugged, or pilots or mechanics who have prevented crashes. I'm not blaming these kids for being victims, I'm saying that being at a place where something bad happens don't bestow some magical expertise on a thing. They can tell us what happened, and how it made them feel, but it doesnt make them experts on policy and tactics.

You're always a child. Do you have a Mother? Do you have Father?

It's School Children not School Young Adults

You're such an idiot. You knew what he was asking and you come up with this. Pretty pathetic, but that's how you roll..

There really are a lot of potential dividing lines.

We trust them to drive at 16.

We trust them to sign contracts and be responsible for themselves with no parental interference at 18.

We don't trust them to drink until 21.

They can't be "dependents" after 24, except in rare cases.

They are still "dependents" until 26 for health insurance policies.

The brain is not fully formed until 25.

They can get an abortion at any age without parental knowledge or consent, but they can't take an aspirin on their own until they are out of school.

Generally, if it supports one's point to call them "kids" (like, they aren't experienced enough to opine on a subject, or the cops shot mamma's po' baby boi), then they are kids. If it is supporting of one's point to call them young men/women (i.e., an 18 year old who shoots at a cop, or shoots up a school, or breaks into someone's home), then they are men/women.

At least, this is how it seems to me.

This is exactly what I was thinking. They are children when it suits them and adults when it doesn't.
