How to dispose of tainted ammo?

Since we're on the subject of old ammo, I have some rounds of 30-30 that are about 40 years old. One box looks fine visually, but the other box has some green tarnish where the bullet meets the cartridge. Can I clean that off and use them, or should I discard those rounds?

If I were you, I'd wipe one down with white vinegar to see if the corrosion comes clean. Test fire one in your least favorite rifle and see if it's still live. I wonder how old some of the 7.62X54R were that I've fired.
