HP Laptop Network Issues

Ok, so I have a dv9000 (I think that is the series, I am not 100% sure off hand..i'm at work :lmao:) Hp laptop. It seems like it is having issues with the network card, but the wireless in particular. For instance, I can be across the house (where the wireless used to work fine though) and it will not connect to the router when I turn on the laptop. I can even go right up next to the router and it still fails to connect. When I plug in the ethernet cord though, the internet works fine. Then, I can even disconnect the ethernet cord and have the wireless connect (sometimes, its been hit or miss).

I just wanted to see if anyone had any input. Maybe you have a similar model that had similar issues? I'm thinking that for some reason, the computer is turning off the network card and so it isn't automatically being able to connect to the wireless, and then the card/driver is being turned on again whenever I connect using a physical connection. I don't know of any way to manually load up the wireless networking drivers though, and i've played around a little bit in there and can't find a thing.

Any thoughts? (Just hoping someone has some input, thought it is worth a shot to post while i'm at work and bored :lmao:)

Let's try something really simple first. Try rebooting the Wireless Access Point/Router.

What happens?

good idea....i'm at work though :lmao:

i'll try that later.

the thing is...

other people can connect to the router wirelessly w/o any issues (as far as I know, we have another laptop that i'm assuming has connected fine, haven't tried myself because it isn't mine..and then my grandma also connects to our router wirelessly and she hasn't had any out of the ordinary issues...)

but i shall try later...do you mean just resetting my modem? turning it off for 30 seconds or whatever then back on, or actually the router? two different things for me...I'd have to just unplug the router to reset it I think, I can't even remember off hand if there was another way to reset it...

Kernel panic: Aiee.......
Does the problem occur only after comming out of sleep or suspend mode? Or is it random? Either way, get the latest wireless drivers from HP.

If it only happens after comming out of sleep/suspend you can turn off your wireless card before going into sleep/suspend. Then after comming out of sleep/suspend turn the wireless card back on. Hopefully HP has updated drivers for your wireless card so you don't have to do the above.

It wouldn't hurt to to reboot both devices. If that doesn't work, then go ahead a try updating drivers.

Are you using Vista by any chance?

I have a HP dv4000 with the some problem although not as often as you. The wireless router shows as still good but the network card has lost the connection. I have to go to the “Wireless Network Connection” icon on the bottom, right click and hit repair. This will reset the IP address and correct the problem (it does for me). Hope this helps.

Check the top or front right side, there is a wireless network button I believe on that particular model of laptop, push it in.

That model has an issue with wireless failing after sleep mode, if I recall one of my tech notes. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow when I'm at work. I don't remember if there was a work-around.

see, this was my ORIGINAL issue, but now i'm having an (almost) total failure of it. Now, I can even restart the computer and it still won't connect.

O, and I have the most updated drivers, just got them this weekend (or there abouts).

rebooted both, no luck.

and yes, I am using vista...but it has been vista from the get-go, its not like I recently updated to it (I honestly didn't want it :lmao:..just didn't feel like installing xp since I already had an "alright" working OS)

it actually slides, and yes, its in the right position  :lmao:

Mine has done this twice now. First time under warranty. Turned out to be the antenna. I'm guessing the little light next to the wireless switch is yellow on the front that indicates it is not seeing wireless? I eliminated the wireless card inside on mine and it works when actually plugged in so I'm guessing antenna again.

ack, thats what I was afraid of...anyone know when columbus day is? I think my warranty was a year and I bought it that weekend :lmao:

how difficult is it to access the wireless card? Can I fairly easily replace it maybe? I tried taking the computer apart last weekend but I got too irritated at those little plastic tabs you have to push in to get the keyboard half seperated...so I just gave up and put it back together.

There is little reason to have a laptop if I still have to go to the dam router to connect to the internet... :frown:

The wireless card is easily accessed through the bottom on mine. The small panel. Its a HP Pavillion 9000 series. You can see the antenna leads, black and gray coming off of it. It was one of the things HP had me check over the phone. A new one is about $60, I think. Try reseating it and the leads.

That happened to mine also. It started working after several days and then quit entirely.

hmm, I would think I can probably access it easily as well...but its not a definite. I know I have a panel for my HDD and for my ram and for something else, I hope its the wireless card. If it is that, I guess I just sort of ignored it because I wasn't sure what it was (it was so small and i'm not used to that...i've only taken apart one laptop before and it was just a project one at school that didn't have many accessories and was old...i've only done desktops). I shall investigate further when I get home I guess.

Thanks

edit:

Oh, and I don't think that applies to my situation GW. Mine has issues even when connected to AC power.

It is a very small card. About 1.5x1.5 inches I'd guess. Interesting that there is a panel just for that one little card. Hmmm, kind of makes you wonder.

By any chance, do your laptops have a built-in Wireless WAN (1x/EVDO, as opposed to WiFi) ? If you do, and you're not using it, turn it off in the hardware.

o hell...

this doesn't make me feel any better...

argh, well I REALLY REALLY don't want to have to replace the whole dam computer. I'm going to try to get this worked out...But I ALSO would rather upgrade to an even better computer than go in and change out the motherboard. Guess it would be a good learning experience in terms of laptop upgrades/modification...
