Hughesnet?

Does anybody here use their internet service? I think I recall a discussion here or elsewhere that said their service wasn't very good. They have an offer now on high-speed internet service and for me it looks like the only available option. Opinion or experiences appreciated.

Thanks!

I've had hughesnet for almost a year now... I like it! I'm very happy with the highspeed ineret service... wish they'd come down in price some, but its good, no complaints here! It will go out like any satellite during a storm but its just momentarily, it goes out less than the directTV if that helps any. I live near gallant green a few miles up from Hughsville. When I first ordered this I thought Hughesnet was out of Hughsville and had some misunderstandings at the start but after that all went well. :yay:

I have hughesnet satellite internet too. I've had it for a year and a half. IT's pricey, but if you are like me, it was my only option as far as getting broadband. I live too far off the road and no cable was run when our house was built. Plus, no DSL, so satellite was my only option too. It's good, not as fast as cable, but as long as your dish stays precisely where the signal is, you are fine, but unlike directv, it's very very sensative to positioning of the dish. I had my dish move a tiny bit during that terrible Nor' Easter storm we had here a couple weekends ago, and I lost my signal. After trying to trouble shoot it with tech support (which btw, is usually some guy in India, until they can't fix it and then they direct your call to an american you can understand) for more time than I care to admit, I got off the phone and went out and tried to move my dish a little and actually got my signal back! lol It had to improve since I wasn't getting anything! ;-) Anyway, It's good. If you don't have another option, I would do it. It used to be called Direcway, but Hughes bought them out and now they are Hughes. Your email with be whatevername@hughes.net , so think of something good! Have fun. Hope that helps some. :howdy:

oh, one more thing.. if I were you, I'd rather not have the satellite dish mounted on the roof. I'd worry about it being pushed around in the wind, working up holes in your roof, and also, and this was a big one, in snow storms, if your dish fills with snow, you won't be able to get a signal and would have to wait until it melted off (on the rooftop ones), whereas, mine is ground mounted and I can just go out on my deck and sweep it off during heavy snow storms. jmho

Thanks for the information folks! We live off the beaten path (13 homes on our road) so no cable, DSL, etc. We have Direct TV and have trouble during hard rains and snow. Ours is mounted on a post too so I'll have to see if they can install another dish without making the house look like a NASA satellite outpost!

Thanks again! :yay:

p.s., How do you folks define "pricey?"

Ok..... :lmao: I pay $21 per month for Earthlink dial-up service. Am I looking at $100 or so for Hughesnet? I know, pick up the phone and call... :smack:

I would do that but they have to be nice....not so much here. :howdy:

Seems like the upfront cost is a lot.

Had Hughesnet/Direcway for 4 years and finally canceled by far the worse service out there. It bogs down at times to speeds worse then dial up. if your looking for 1200 ms ping times get Hughesnet...Terrible customer service....horrendous tech support. Go with EVDO and you will be happy.

EVDO is faster and the ping times are between 100-200ms...works great for gaming, vpn and overall web surfing/email. Plus there are no huge upfront cost like hughes....Sprint and VZ are around 59.99 a month.

Sprint is unlimited FAP and VZ is capped at 5gb

Keep in mind Hughes also has a very strict FAP policy depending on which plan u go with.

Pricey, like 500 up front for equipment and then I pay 59.99 a month. If you sign on with hughes, you'll have to have a 15 month contract committing to continue service for that time. You also get free service with that contract time, so but as soon as that contract time is up, if you need service of some sort, they charge 125. to come out. I think it covers labor and parts, but sheesh! Price i pay for faster than my awful 24600 bsp dial up I was 'snailing' on before. I don't do VOIP, so latency isn't that big a deal for me. Online gaming with fast action and reactions isn't good either, from what I've heard. Not that I do that either. Good night peeps. :howdy:

You can usually get the equipment off ebay or local sales for under $200, then about $60 a month. Installation is about $200. Hughes requires a certified installer do the installation and will not activate the system unless he's there at the time.

:yeahthat: Had Direcway for about a year until they brought cable into our neighborhood. It's BARELY better than dial up, and VERY pricey.. I'd opt for the VZ broadband before Direcway. It's only $45 a month for unllimited access, and you can even network off of it. Either buy a smartphone you can tether off of (be my choice), or an aircard. You'll be happier, and the internet can travel with you.

Pookieboo!!!
It definitely sucks for the price. VPN and online gaming is no go. I guess if you can't get a EVDO card, DSL or cable then it's your only option. HughesNet has it's moments when it just sits there.

I had a bunch of friends that worked for DirecWay and even they said it sucked.

What is the deal with verizon? My SIL uses her laptop for business on the road or anyplace there is cell service. Is it pricey and fast?

Yes pretty good speed.....You can do 80mph down the road and surf the internet at the same time without losing your connection, If your a heavy downloader go with sprint..there unlimited ...Verizon has a monthly 5gb cap. I will say for this area VZ has a great coverage area. I've also heard Sprint is pretty good also in this area.

There both 59.99 a month....avoid Hughesnet at all cost......terrible service!!!

I average about 1.4 -1.6meg down and 600-800K up in Rev-A areas. Which mot in SOMD are now. Latency is between 100-200ms
