Hurricane Isabel?

Hey, we just moved to the area, and was wondering which areas were hit the hardest by Isabel... We just moved from the Gulf of mexico and went through Ivan and Katrina, so I'm freaked out by them completely....

You SO do not need to be freaked about hurricanes in MD. Maybe in on the Atlantic coast (Ocean City) for the Nor'Easters, but around here, you do not need to worry. That said, flooding can be an issue if you live on the water, so make sure you have flood insurance if you do.

:yeahthat:

Hurricanes are rare here, and even when we get activity it's no big deal. A tornado ripped through LaPlata, but that was a freak.

I live very close to Ocean City.

Hurricane Isabel downed trees and we lost power for several days.

We buckled down and partied while she blew her way through, and enjoyed a simple life until power was restored. :buddies:

Welcome to the area.

Watch out for the "Smow" storms. They are fierce here.

I heard yesterday on the news that the conditions were right for a major hurricane this year on the central and northeast coast :frown:

I think we've had about five hurricanes that caused significant property damage since I moved here in 1967. But none of them has caused major devastation.

Isabel caused flood damage to parts of Solomons south of the tide box bridge, but nothing was totalled.

Yeah yeah. And Bird Flu is going to kill us all.

I heard the same thing but I'll believe it when it happens.

It is very unwise to assume that Coastal Maryland won't/can't be affected by hurricanes. Hurricane Isabel actually caused quite a lot of damage in Southern Maryland. In fact, the western coast of the bay had much more damage than Ocean City which we typically think of as the bulleye zone in Maryland. Clearly, the most vulnerable areas are those within the 100-year floodplain, which is very well defined in each of the SoMD counties. You can find that information at your County Planning and Zoning office or office of emergency management.

When people ask me if we can have a Katrina in Maryland, I tell them no, with qualifiers. The most important reason we won't have a Katrina-like hurricane here is that no where do we have 600,000 people living 6 feet below sea-level. But more importantly, we're just better prepared and have a lot better level of communication and cooperation here than the Gulf. However, that is not to say we cannot have a catastrophic hurricane or other disaster event in Maryland... we can, and we will, one of these days.

Coastiewife... be concerned, be prepared, but do not let it overwhelm you. We have a significant threat of hurricanes here, but it is nothing compared to the gulf coast states.

I'll agree that it's nothing compared the the Gulf states, but I disagree that there is "significant" threat.

There is no more threat of natural disaster here than in any other part of the country. I lived in SoMD for 11 years and can count on one hand the number of times I so much as lost power for more than a few minutes. The ice storm back in the mid-90's is the biggest event I can recall, and that had nothing to do with hurricanes. LaPlata got nailed by a tornado a few years ago, which did some significant damage, but it was fairly isolated and didn't cause region-wide destruction.

It's not like this is an annual event or anything.

Seriously though, there is nowhere in the country that you can live totally free from worry of some sort of devistating storm.
Marylands weather is better than most places as far as that goes.
Our biggest fear around these parts is flooding of roads near the rivers, and a storm surge on the water front areas. The nice thing is that it only takes a tide change to bring the water back to normal after a storm,,, not the entire U.S governments corps of army engineers.

Let me add this.
The first thing you need to do when you move here is set up a snow emergency closet in the home somewhere.
You will need to fill it with toilet paper, bread making items, powdered milk, and gummy bears.

Once the weather stations come out and say that it is going to snow,, flurries count, everyone jumps in their car and races each other to the stores to stock up on as much milk, tp, and bread, (and gummy bears) as their almost maxed out visa will afford them.

Isabel is the worst tropical storm we've seen here in the fifteen years I've been here. I lost power for three days. As I recall, there were two deaths in MD from Isabel, but they were some boneheads who ran their generator inside their house.

Yes we can be affected. The risk of serious damage is low.

The ice storm of February 16, 1994 was the worst thing I've seen. The trees were falling so fast it almost sounded like a war zone. I lost power for five days. I dread another ice storm far more than a hurricane.

Hurricanes are the least of your worries. People around here STILL talk about the ice storm from the early 90's.

I've lived up and down the Northeast all my life. I lived IN Wilkes-Barre during the Agnes flood. I was IN Boston during Hurricane Gloria, and I drove through it during its peak. And in this area, other than Isabel, I think we had a problem with Fran, which knocked out power for a while. And that's about it. Isabel took out our power for a few days, and killed a few of our trees. While I saw enormous damage to *trees* - and the consequences of downed trees - I saw no damage to homes.

To be honest, this is the ONE place I've lived in years where I'm pretty sure I'm NOT gonna be slammed by the weather.

I'd have to agree with this . The ice storm was MUCH worse than Isabel for us. The worst hurricane I've been through here was Floyd, and that wasn't all that terrible either.

I did hear on the radio news yesterday that they are predicting a big one for the east coast/mid atlantic states next hurricane season. Said we're over due for a big one. But I've heard that before.

Those bastards, are they trying to suggest that there is something genetically wrong with Maryland men?

Every year the chicken little weather "forecasters" say the mid atlantic states are long over due for a big storm. I will wait until I see the storm form and projected path before I run out and get my milk tp and gummy bears. :howdy:
