I was going through a valpack envelope one day and saw a coupon for hypnosis - lose weight, stop smoking. $40 for both at the Waldorf Holiday Inn. Decided I'd wasted $40 on a lot of more ridiculous things, so I went. More than 300 people in the room. Went outside and smoked my head off during the "lose weight" part. Went back in for the Stop Smoking hypnosis and the whole time he was droning on about not smoking I was telling myself "this isn't working". When it was all over, I thought "what the hell" and threw my cigarettes in the provided trash can. That was almost 13 years ago. Have never wanted a cigarette since. For many years, you could blow smoke right in my face and it never triggered any sort of memory for me (unlike other times when I tried to quit and I'd be all "ooooh that's my brand" when someone lit up. It literally was like I'd never smoked. Now I am like most nonsmokers and hate the smell.
I was a pack and a half smoker, but my cravings after hypnosis were almost nonexistent - I could work through them by the breathing exercise they mentioned during hypnosis - inhale and exhale as if I were smoking. But really, that was only necessary for a few days. My only withdrawl was a slight headache the night of the hypnosis.
Electronic cigarettes, nicotine gum, patches aren't really a good way to try to quit. They dont really eliminate the habit or the craving. Any time I tried any of those, I'd reach a point where I'd feel I'd been doing good enough that I could reward myself with - ....a cigarette. Cut them out completely and tell yourself you're a non-smoker. Nothing else really works as well.
