I am worried about her cat...

Dymphna's cat has us worried. She's 13 years old. She has decided that she will no longer go downstairs. That's where her food, water and litter box are. She is hanging out in weird places (on top of Boy's dresser, in the back of Girl's drawer, on shelf in linen closet, on shelf in pantry, middle of kitchen table, kitchen counter). She's barely eating and drinking (we brought dry food upstairs for her and have been giving her canned food as well).

She had fleas pretty bad. We did not know until she was infested. Have bathed her (that was fun) and liquid'd her. No more fleas. Took a urine sample to the vet on Saturday. They called while I was on the way home to say she had blood in her urine and to come get an antibiotic immediately. Dym did that. Took her to the vet Monday. She still had blood in her urine. Gave a second antibiotic for her.

She's not peeing often (about once every 2-3 days) and pooping the same. Have to lock her in the bathroom at night or she goes wherever she happens to be sleeping.

So you haven't actually taken the cat to the vet? She needs a "blood panel" done. Sounds like it's kidney failure...perhaps cancer.. She could have diabetes but sounds like she's pretty sick, poor thing. I'll bet she's dehydrated and that alone can make them feel horrible.

Thirteen isn't terribly old for a cat. Unfortunately, they hide their illnesses very well. I'd get her to the vet sooner than later. Until you can get her to the vet, you should be giving her water with an eye dropper or something similar. She might also eat baby food, just the meat..chicken, turkey...not the mixed meats.

Sorry to hear she's not doing well.

Fleas and dehydration did my favorite cat in (yes, we have faves) many years ago. If I had gotten her to the vet and on IV sooner she may have lived. She even needed a blood transfusion, but it was too late.

Best of luck. :huggy:

Vet seemed to think that not peeing every day was a GOOD sign. Said he'd be more concerned about frequent urination. And he said he was impressed that she managed to flood the inside of the carrying crate on the way to the office. Said he couldn't feel any thing such as stones in her bladder and wants to see if the combo of antibiotics works. It would be nice if she'd stop spitting them out though.

Excuse me.

Very strange.

Dymphna (sp)what i had to do with one of my cats (famous pill spitter outer) was basically shove the pill all the way down the throat and then rub it so the cat can't spit it back out unless she happened to puke it back up. The vets office also sells pill guns too if that doesn't work.

He said that UTIs cause frequent urination...dribbles all over, that sort of thing. But that's not the case. But the fact that she did flood the crate was a sign that she has urine in her bladder, so her kidneys aren't shut down, she's just holding it.

I'm not sure where she is at the moment. She's not in any of the "strange" places we've found her lately, which leads me to believe she actually went downstairs, which would be a good sign.

The pill she has isn't the problem. She'll chew that up with a handful of cat treats and not notice the difference. It's the liquid she won't take. She shakes her head and spits it out. We tried putting it in food and she whined and refuses to eat.

try calling back the vets office and see if they have what they gave her in pill form that is what I had to do with my famous spitter like you got I see and they did and I gave it to the cat with no problems. Sorry you are having such a time with your kitty (I have a 14yr old female cat and she hates pills or anything that requires you having to stick something in her mouth).

They have my cat on Asodyl and Cosequin for the rest of her life because she has kidney disease. I would ask about these medications. She no longer has blood in her urine and is acting like a kitten again. Unfortunately she still has a terminal diagnosis, but she is feeling better and will be healthy and happy for the rest of her life.

Seriously inquire about these meds. I am positive they saved her life! Also on top of my persistance and the fact that I syringe fed her for weeks until she finally started eating on her own.

Good Luck and hopefully she will get better! :huggy:

I found her...she's behind the TV set. She used to climb in there when she was a kitten, but hasn't been back there in 2-3 years.

Well, she spent last night prowling the kitchen looking for something to eat that wasn't cat food. I know this because I heard her jumping up and down and then this morning there was :barf: on the floor that indicated that she'd managed to find a single piece of children's cereal and about a quarter inch of "Cranberry Sierra Mist" that one of the kids left in a cup on the kitchen table.

There was cat food in a bowl in the kitchen this whole time

She's now on top of the kitchen cabinet over the refrigerator.
