There's this newfangled crazy invention called an MP3 player.....they come in all shapes and sizes...you can store mass amounts of music on them and play what you want to!

If you don't want to do that, and want a DJ to give you news updates etc...there is another contraption called XM/Sirius....it's inexpensive and can be used anywheres!

You obviously didn't read my entire post did you?

Any thoughts or am I a delusional blurry eyed insomniac right now?:drummer:

Wow, there are a lot of issues in there; geography, technology, demagraphics,...
I'm not from the DC area so I don't know, but I'll guess that like a lot of urban centers there are a wide range of FM stations in the city and the surrounding burbs. The problem for us in So.MD is that they often don't have very powerful signals so getting the stations here is rather difficult.
As for the format and play lists, I think it use to be the program director controlled that but it's my understanding that it's all contracted out. Owners bring in consultants that tell them what's going to sell ad time (supposedly what's going to get listeners). Once they select a format, they might actually by the entire program, the music is all preselcted and edited to fit the format. They leave queues for the in studio personality to do the talking. It use to be the DJ would do a lead in, introduce the song, when I listen to the radio now, I don't hear that. It's just the music.
Hell, some of the So MD stations don't even have an on air / in studio person, everything is pre-recorded. The engineer just queues things up and plays them. It's all about keeping costs down.

And such was the problem for The Rocket I think at the time. While this is a small market, there was only one on air personality with The Rocket and there never seemed to be any engagement by the station to the community, which is something every radio station I've ever listened to has done. There was very little in the way of promotions, or contests with the station, nothing that ever could be interpreted as saying "Hey! You should listen to our station because we do this!"

I recall when I lived in Louisville Kentucky attending a lot of promotions and such put together by one of the local stations. Was fun, got exposure for the station and made the station feel like part of the community. That was something I never felt from the Rocket though I am sure that they had promotions and such, there was never any WOW factor to anything they ever pulled off. That is why I said in my first post, The ROcket was an alright station, but not the best station I'd ever listened to.

I would love to be in the radio business. It's something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I'd like to be on the air and talking to listeners and being able to play music and come up with promotional ideas and the like. That kind of thing interests me.

I wish I could pick up some DC or Baltimore stations down here, either in the house OR in the car. I miss the days of radio with a DJ around the clock, calling in requests, contests, news reports that are current for the day, etc. Those days are long gone. I hate this prerecorded crap. I do admit I have heard some songs on 97.7 that I haven't heard in 25 or more years had forgotten about...because I hated them when they were popular...lol.

I have a hard time believing that some of that stuff was popular at one time.:lalala:

I agree with you. I remember the days when you could call in to report an accident or roadway hazard to the DJ and within minutes it would be on the air to alert other drivers. As Pingsteal said, a radio station has to be involved with the community - Live broadcasts from local businesses or sporting events, local programming such as the "Swap Shop" on 107.5 in Warsaw, contests for concert tickets, etc. I've tried satellite radio and it sucks imo. It just sounds so dull and boring. I refuse to pay for that crap.

BTW, has anyone ever figured up what you spend each month for communications, for connectivity - Cell Phone, Cable/Satellite TV, Internet/Email, House phone, Fax Line, Satellite Radio, GPS/Onstar service, ITunes supscription, Movie/On Demand/Netflix, etc. All of this amounts to a car (small) payment ($200+ for this poster!)- a payment that we didn't have 10-15 years ago! Is it all worth it - to work 1 day every month just to pay to make our lives more complicated??

Who remembers WPGC when it was Top 40?
I remember, I also remember the "redhead in the morning" gal too. I haven't listened to that station in years because of the crap it switched to playing oh so long ago. OMG I'm showing my age...lol.
