I don't think they've been there lately

Patuxent River Naval Air Station Patuxent River was awarded its 24th consecutive Tree City USA award on Thursdday, April 25. The award was presented by a representative from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The air station was also presented with a Maryland PLANT Community Award.
I think it looks more like the base has declared war on trees.

I don't know anything about ripping trees out. I donate to have trees PLANTED

Very good. In case you or anyone else is not aware the base has planted hundreds of trees over the last 10 years or so. I doubt this will happen again, but One grove planted in memory of the Challenger disaster is fairly mature now. The other is still fairly young and is visible from 235 between gates 1 and 2.

There's a lot of land on base that is not immediately visible from the most commonly travelled roads. I would assume that if Pax is receiving this reward they are planting elsewhere to replace those trees being cut down.

I didn't realize they were going to take down as much as they did. Just saw it all Thursday. The woods next to the Lemon Lot is gone, across the street by the photo lab gone, between the runway and Millstone Road (Lorax country....). Looks really odd with all the trees missing.

Doubt it. And they aren't done. Anyone seen this? If you have concerns as to what is going on there is a townhall meeting 6PM on May 7th at the Center Stage Theater for you to have your say.

But you all know that Steny Hoyer will find a way to claim victory for nature somehow. There's a Congressional election in a little over a year so look to see him out there with a shovel and a business suit (plus a couple hundred photographers) soon.

I guess we still have money to cut down trees but not pay people. Well done a$$holes.

They sure as hell have. I guess the tower think it needs to see every taxiway suddenly. Or maybe they are selling the wood to help with the budget.
Have you ever worked on an airfield? The tower not only controls all aircraft on the field it also controls all vehicles. If the weapons department is transporting live ordnance on the field and there are fuel trucks on the field, won't you think the tower should see be able to see all parts of the airfield.

Also, the base has been planting trees in various places on the base since I've been here and there is Challenger and Columbia park. Also, some of the areas where they are building around south engineering were not covered with trees, they were field that the base rented out for farming.

I've worked on THAT airfield for 25 years, I've been in that tower since before they put windows in it, I can promise you that the views from there had not changed significantly since it was installed.

Could it be that they are removing those trees in order to get rid of some of the birds?

No, the birds that are the big issue are in the tall grass surrounding the field and in the infield. Their using the line of sight issue as the reasoning for the deforestation.

I'm sure they could see much better from the old tower...not. Perhaps they realized when they finally got a real tower that if they cut down trees they could see.

You started it in the other thread.

I would hope a fuel and ordinance truck could avoid each other. They do ok on the roads. Or do they have controller help there also?
