I don't think they've been there lately

I would hope a fuel and ordinance truck could avoid each other. They do ok on the roads. Or do they have controller help there also?
That right there tells me you have complete lack of understanding of the subject. Please show me where live 1.1 ordnance is transported over public roads.

Not live, but stuff like blivies, practice bombs. See it all the time. I think they could mess up a fuel truck. So could any vehicle. We are you being so weird about this? We listen to AC traffic all the time and I have yet to hear them say "fuel truck #213, hold at taxi way whatever. I see them stopped and watching though. Maybe they should put radios in any car on base. We usually can spot an aircraft at a crossing.

And I have seen live ordinance on the road. They have escorts.

That's because the ground controller are on a different frequency. I've worked on the airfield here, Oceana and Cecil Field, all movement on the airfield is controlled by the tower. You have to call for permission to get on the field, you have to call for permission to cross any runway, you have to call when you are clear of the airfield. The ground controllers keep track of all vehicles that are on the airfield.

I'm not being weird, I just think everyone is over reacting because the base is cutting down some eff'ing trees.

It's O R D N A N C E, ordinance is a law/regulation, ORDNANCE is explosives.

Have you seen 1.1 ordnance, no, 1.1 is the bombs/high explosive stuff. Also, have you seen the stuff being escorted off base, it's only escorted on base, and again, it's not high explosive.

I kind of figure there's not much left to escort off. And I really didn't see many over react, just comment about the clearing. So how did they manage with the old tower and no views?

I had no idea there was a ground control.

There are several ground control freqs, one for emergency vehicles, one for aircraft, and one for all other vehicles. These are just the ones I know.

In the old tower, some of the airfield was covered by CATV such has the NAWC Pad. I know the VX-1 pad was blocked and maybe the Cedar Point Rd crossing.

I never claimed to have any knowledge of ordnance.

But yet you claim you see live ordnance being transported on public roads.

Can you tell the difference between a live Mk 82 500 lb bomb and an inert one?

With the old tower there was several blind spots on the airfield, the new tower was suppose to eliminate most of those blind spots but some trees were still required to be removed in order to eliminate all the blind spots.

NAS Pax River is an active airfield, being a tree/bird sanctuary is not it's primary purpose. While steps are being taken to protect the environment and wildlife, the safe operation of aircraft are the first priority and if a few trees have to be removed for that to happen, then so be it.

.

Well..I know it certainly used to be common, and often. Back when I was the Lead Project Engineer for the Mk66 rocket program, I moved live 70mm (2.75") rounds from Indian Head to Pax to/from Dahlgren to/from Radford AAP to Yuma, to China Lake to Camden, AR to Huntsville..to....

All by truck. (Some in the back of my pickup truck).:buddies:

The tower was moved because where they put presidential helo blocked the view of the end of 24 and the helo program was spending money like it was going to be worthless within the week. The inert bombs are blue, the live are gray.

It's still legal to transport rocket motors by road, because they are 1.3C, not 1.1.

And I highly doubt you moved the ordnance, you may have ordered the move but the weps dept at those bases did the actually shipping. And how did you know that ordnance was shipped by truck and not rail?

Also, you and I both know that it is illegal to transport ordnance in the back of your truck.

Not always, next time you drive by the museum, look at those bombs on the A-6 and tell me what color they are.

As far as the tower being moved, that is correct, it was moved because the presidential helo hanger did block the approach end of one of the run ways, but the old tower still had blind spots on airfield.

I'm not debating why the tower was moved, I'm commenting on the over reaction of the base cutting down some trees.

You wouldn't know it by your posts, three quarters of them have been on the proper spelling and color of ordnance.

Yeah, I haven't noticed it for a long while. I have no idea what they were bringing in on those trucks. They always used gate 3 and they were covered. Could have been rockets, flares, bombs as far as I know. Also to the other post, yes, I can tell the difference between practice and live. The live ones go boom.

How long since you've been on board Pax? If lately, then you have a mighty strange definition of "some." I'd say "clear-cutting" is more accurate.
