Greetings to all from sunny Jacksonville, Florida. The weather is great, the people are great, and the freedom is soooooo uplifting!!!
We got into town on the 5th, and have been busy getting the new homestead in order. My daughter came down with us and has been steadilly purging the poisons of Maryland from her system. Her first shock came when we went to a nearby Wal Mart Supercenter, and just about every shopper we passed in the isles said "hey", or "hi", or "good evening", etc. Mary was like "do you know these people?" and I said "No... it's just how people are down here."
Then we stopped at a Sonic park & eat fast-food place, and there were a bunch of folks on motorcycles eating dinner. We noticed that the folks riding around didn't wear helmets, and I asked them if there was a helmet law. They said that there had been, but it had been voted out a while back. I asked who voted it out and they said "we did." Ahhhhh... true democracy. There is currently an initiative to allow slot machines on the ballet for November. If enough people want them, they'll be legal. If the majority says no, then they won't be. There's no playing around with legislatures down here.
As for guns, I was in a gun shop on Tuesday, and saw a nice deal on a Colt Official Police revolver. We agreed on a price, and I presented my shiny new Florida driver's license. The shop owner ran an insta-check on me and I came back clean. I handed him my $150 and walked out of the store with my new handgun in a plastic bag... the way things out to be.
Oh... and last Saturday, I was working in the garage, and had to get a tool from the box in the trunk of my car. I went into the house later, and forgot to close the trunk of the car. About midnight there was a knock on my door, and a nice Clay County Sheriff's Office Deputy informed me that my trunk was open and that I should probably close it before I turned in for the night. I thanked him for stopping by and we talked for about 20 minutes about crime in the area. He said there isn't much, and they like to keep it that way. He told me they drive through the neighborhoods a couple times a night to make sure all is well. Very nice.
Yep... Florida sure beats Maryland.
