IRS has several offices....I am currently on a payment plan with them and actually have been for the past five years. I have mailed my payment to New York, Kansas, down south......etc

They can come after you for ten (10) years after a tax year (believe me I know) LOL.

When you call them, they will require your social security number, your filing status and whether you received a refund or owed taxes last year. They ask this to verify that you are actually you.

I will say that you must respond to them in a timely manner, otherwise they do levy your bank account, (again believe me I know). But on that note, I will say that when I communicate with the IRS, they have been wonderful to work with, they are very flexible and work with you (again, I know, hence me being on a payment plan for so long). Good luck!

For some reason Hubby's company apparently did a seperate w2 for a $2k bonus that he recieved 3 years ago. For some reason we never recieved a copy of the w2 so it didnt go in that years return. Taxes were with held and we actually would have received MORE of a refund had we filed that w2. They sent us a letter saying that since we didnt we owe them $600 and change WTF  After an hour on hold I finally got through to a live person who said that can just deduct that amount from our 2010 return.

Hopefully it will work that way; In Oct of 08 I was transferred to a different division of my company, I didn't catch the 2nd w-2 and had plenty of taxes witheld from it but got a $970. bill for "inaccurate filing penalties" even though they owed me money back, they F you every chance they get as long as you hold still for it.

Yup that is exactly what they told me. Not much I can do about it now other than pay it. I did go off on hubby's work though. They sent the IRS and us his w2 at the end of January 2008, yet didnt send out that 2nd w2 for the bonus until March 2008 :eyebrow:

We never recieved our copy, otherwise like I said we would have filed it. It would have ended up giving us almost 1k back since almost 50% of the bonus was taken out for taxes. I think someone there dropped the ball and now is trying to CTA since the IRS contacted us about this, but again not much we can do other than pay it. I also dont understand why they would give out a seperate w2 for a bonus when his original w2 is says wages, tips , & other commission... but what the #### do I know right.

I believe there is a 7 yr statute for them to check your returns but the part about an "annual" letter means if they claim they sent you a letter in the past about a debt, the 7 yr deal is nul as long as the first letter was within the 7 yr period(doesn't matter if you received them or not). Seems as though it may be legit, may not be accurate but I would contact them and ask them to explain(unless you have something to hide). I dealt with it and it's a pain but the worse thing you could do would be ignore it. If you contact them now, they may wave penalties and such......Good Luck

Actually, the IRS has ten years to collect.
