I really want a dog!

We used to have one but mny youngest is allergic. We have a few choices.... get rid of my youngest and get a dog.... Keep my youngest and get a dog that won't irritate her allergies.... Keep my daughter and never get a dog again out of fear for her allergies.

Which breeds are okay for people with allergies? I've read that some dogs are okay but woukld like some options as to which ones are better than others. I was also told that if we get a puppy my daughter will build up a tolerance to it as it gets older. Is this a true statement? We're going to have her tested to confirm that it's a dog allergy and to see if maybe she's out grown it if it was an allergy... I really, really miss having a nice family dog.

They say Wheaton Terriers don't shed, and Shih Tuz, shed very little.

You want a dog that does not shed. Most of those breeds are of the smaller kind: poodle, bichon frise, lhasa apso, Airedale Terrier, maltese, etc.

They say Wheaton Terriers don't shed, and Shih Tuz, shed very little.

Shih Tzu's don't shed. They are good with allergies because their hair is more "human like" than other dogs. I currently have two.

Bischons don't carry the same dandruff as most dogs and can be around people with allergies

When I was younger I was never allergic to the dogs/cats..after many years of showing persians ..having house dogs and grooming I developed allergies to dogs/cats..Still grooming and having house dogs/cats I went through 3 yrs of allergy shots.. I am now very tollerent of the animals..Giving them up was never an option to me...

Poodles are well known to be hypoallergetic..

I have a Chinese crested that seems to be great for the allergies..

Important to have the animal you choose groomed and bathed regularly as it is mostly the dander that builds up that you are allergic too..

If I'm not mistaken Pugs are on the list for little to no allergy dogs. I just love those smooshy faces!!

I would check with a vet or a breeder because I have been told it is not always just the fur but the dandruff as well.

There are no true non-hypoallergenic dogs but there are dogs that you would be less allergic to because of their coats. Some of them are poodles, terriers, schnauzers. Check this site out:

Is it true that pet dander is caused by the dried saliva left on the fur when an animal licks or cleans itself? Im confused I was also told that many allergic people buy exotic birds only to find the dust they produce by constant preening is more irritating.

I have a cairn terrier. They are really great, smart and loving dogs with wonderful personalties. Mine doesn't shed hardly at all.

Yes that is correct. Dander is dried saliva and is what causes your allergies. I have a really good book about cats and allergies its called "The Sneeze-Free cat owner" Here's the link, it lets you take a look inside the book and you might be able to read some helpful info from that.
