I wasn't going to say anything

...but this is beyond too much.

2 weeks ago I bought some shrimp at McKays on 245. It smelled a bit strong, but figured it just needed to be rinsed. Brought it home, rinsed it completely, smelled ok at that point, put it in a clean container with water and seasoning to brine, and into the fridge. Next day I opened the fridge and the smell was awful. Like dead fish. Drained the container in the sink and threw the shrimp out. Took the trash out and cleaned the kitchen.

For the next week I smelled dead fish in the kitchen as soon as I walked in. Scrubbed everything within an inch of it's life and it still smelled in there. I finally got that to go away, still not sure what smelled, but the fridge is awful. Everything porous in there absorbed the smell. 2 weeks later and it is as strong now as ever. I put some fruit in there yesterday, took a piece today. Now both it and my hand reek of dead fish. I now have to toss anything in there that picked up the smell and scrub the entire fridge and freezer.

A few days ago I needed some ground beef, stopped in McKays again. Walked back to the meat area and the smell of the fish dept was again overly strong to the point where it completely turned me off on the beef which was right next to the fish.

Used to be my fav store. Not so much anymore.

I guess a box of baking soda in the fridge won't do the trick with it that bad. Sorry that happened to you.

Had one in the fridge, one in the freezer. I'm afraid to touch them.

They sell it in buckets in the pool section at Walmart. Get one of those and put it in the fridge. Can't even imagine why the smell is lingering if you cleaned it out. Did you try bleach and make sure nothing leaked down the wall and you missed it?

Haven't cleaned it out yet... on tomorrow's chore list.

This is how bad rotted shrimp can be....(great story)

She spent the first day packing her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases.
On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things.

On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candlelight, put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of Chardonnay.

When she had finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp shells, dipped in caviar, into the hollow of the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the first few days. Then slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning and mopping and airing the place out. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air Fresheners were hung everywhere.

Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days, and in the end, they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting.

Nothing worked. People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house. The maid quit.

Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided to move.

A month later, even though they had cut their price in half, they could not find a buyer for their stinky house. Word got out, and eventually, even the local realtors refused to return their calls.

Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank topurchase a new place.

The ex-wife called the man and asked how things were going. He told her the saga of the rotting house.

She listened politely, and said that she missed her old home terribly and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house back.

Knowing his ex-wife had no idea how bad the smell was, he agreed on a price that was about 1/10th of what the house had been worth on the condition that she sign the papers that very day. She agreed, and within the hour, his lawyers delivered the paperwork.

A week later, the man and his new girlfriend stood smirking as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home...including the curtain rods.

Charcoal absorbs odors too. Put some charcoal in a solo cup and set it in your frige and freezer, see if that helps.

I was thinking about designing an air filter for fridges which use an activated charcoal filter and baking soda, placed over the fan vents.

I actually thought about joke that as I was trying to find the smell.... :lmao:

My husband was looking for something in the freezer one day and was taking stuff out and setting it on top of the fridge, he found what he was looking for and put everything back in. A few days later there was a smell and we couldn't find where it was coming from, we looked everywhere. Like you I scrubbed the entire kitchen and used bleach. When I climbed up on a chair to clean the top of the fridge, there it was a bag of squid (bait) that somehow got missed when he was putting everything back in the freezer. That smell lingered for so long.
