Yeah, my intention wasn't to rip McKays a new one, or tell everyone not to go there, but more like, 'this is a bad experience I had, be aware'.

But if you've eliminated the source the smell shouldn't still be there. I get an awful smell in my nose and it will stay there for days. It's like that cumin thing where I smell BO forever after eating it in something. Maybe the smell is just in your nose?

Did you have someone else come over and smell?

Been there. Check the drip pan under the 'fridge. I would almost bet that is where the smell is coming from.

Wash the whole inside of fridge w/vinegar & water, get new baking soda boxes, put some of the baking soda in little plastic containers w/couple of drops of vanilla in it. You have to wash every jar and container that is in the fridge, all plastic bins and drawers. Coffee grounds in a plastic container also helps absorb odors.
In the air freshener section of most stores is a package of fridge deodorizer. It is little packets w/charcoal or something in it and it works. Been there, had to do the same with my fridge. Don't forget to buy those packets for the fridge, I just did the washing and baking soda and within two days I had the same odor in fridge and freezer. Those packets work!
Have fun!

Okay, but the shrimp should not smell that bad. He said it seemed okay before he put it in the brine and one day later it funked up his whole house.

If it's still anywhere, I'll bet it's in the drain. He said he drained the shrimp before he threw it out, maybe a chunk fell down in or something?

I was thinking that too. I'd dump some vinegar and baking soda, down the drain and watch the volcano. Should get rid of the smell though.

Had one in the fridge, one in the freezer. I'm afraid to touch them.

Did you check the evaporation tray and overflow pipes on the bottom? Have you vacuumed out all the fuzzballs under the fridge? How about any ice-maker and plumbing (including any water filters you have in the plumbing leading to the ice-maker)? Lots of places that aren't immediately evident can pick up nasties from the fridge.

I know someone who had a dead mouse in the drip pan under their fridge.

I used to work at a grocery store, changing the dates on the meat and seafood before it expired in the morning and I wouldn't buy any meat or seafood from McKays if that tells you anything.

All good suggestions, thanx eveyone. Wouldn't have remembered to clean the drip tray. I just threw 4 boxes of baking soda in there for the night, I'll check it in the morning.

Not the sink, Vrai. I stuck my noise right down it, no odor. The kitchen itself is ok now, just took forever for the smell to disappear. And it's not even that it gets up your nose kind of thing. I'd go upstairs for the night, come back down and the smell would hit me, and it would only be the kitchen.

The fridge is getting the royal workover tomorrow. I fired the freezer up in the garage and will transfer stuff out there as I clean it. Most of the veggies and porous boxes are history. Everything else gets wiped down with Clorox or tossed.

I have never had anything stank up a fridge like that before, and I've had some pretty stanky science projects in there. Smell always goes away after a few days.

Worst case, I hate this fridge anyway. I'll go buy a new one. :yay:

This just reminded me of when I was a kid. I used to cut lawns in the neighborhood. One very German couple treated me really well, paid me really well and always gave be a soda when I completed the job. The drink had ice cubes in it and ALWAYS tasted like onions and garlic.

I hate that, I've dumped out entire bins of ice because of that. Yuck.

2 weeks later and it is as strong now as ever. I put some fruit in there yesterday, took a piece today. Now both it and my hand reek of dead fish. I now have to toss anything in there that picked up the smell and scrub the entire fridge and freezer.

you should obvious take a page from :wr: and burn the fridge and replace it

[not in the house of course]

Y'all know if the rumor is true that the older and closer to retirement that you get, the more sensitive your nose becomes? Just wonderin....

Pick up a cheap can or two of ground coffee

Won't help...way past that.

I took the cardboard egg container out this morning to make breakfast. holy yikes it stunk. Everything porous absorbed the stink.

Almost finished weeding out the freezer, will spray it down then start on the fridge.

Maybe you should ask CLEM_SHADY to bring his appliance-modification 3 wood to help you.

My aunt went on a two week vacation once time and right before she left she had the great idea to turn off the whole house breaker, that way there wouldn't be any electrical fires. When she came back she noticed a slight odor and figured she would run the AC a while and the smell would go away, then she opened the fridge...... she actually got the smell out

Oops...

Well, all cleaned out and decontaminated, just taking a break before finishing the shelves. All the contents were cleaned, re-packaged or tossed. Found anything with a paper label was holding that stink, so many labels got peeled off. Also found a foam can coozy and it stunk to high heaven. it went bye-bye.

Never ever have I had something stink that bad. Now it smells like an over-chlorinated swimming pool.
