we always know when customers steal using self-checkout even when we’re not nearby

A Walmart worker ripped customers with sticky fingers, revealing store employees know when patrons steal at self-checkout even when they're not nearby.

The proclaimed employee revealed the behind-the-scenes secret in a TikTok video they captioned: "So yall really don't think we know yall stealing?"

In the video, the employee scrolls through their worker smart tablet, which shows how many items each customer scans at self-checkout and the total amount they paid.

Several TikTok users blasted the employee in the comment section, claiming the company doesn't "pay her enough" to stop them from stealing.

"u work a 9-5, let me steal in peace," wrote one patron.

I’m a counselor – you should avoid self-checkout in Walmart and other stores as it can cost you $1000s

A COUNSELOR has advised shoppers not to use self-checkout in Walmart and other stores as it can cost you thousands of dollars in legal fees.

In the last six months, Sandra Barger, a counselor at Bridges Counseling LLC in Arizona, has observed an increase in petty theft cases among her clients.

While this might not seem unusual, the alarming part is that many of her clients didn't mean to steal anything.

She said that these people don't fit the profile of a typical petty thief.

Instead, they are regular shoppers who accidentally stole something of low value because of a small mistake they made at self-checkout.

Barger exclusively told The Sun that "there was one particular Walmart here in Tucson that I was getting a lot of clients [from] ... it's averaging two to three a week."

Put RFID tags on everything scan the items as they go in the cart .... one final scan as you gop out the door [ the door frame is a scanner ] automatically get billed based on your ' Walmart ' rewards card in you hand as you walk out.

Pretty sure that once or twice, I've made a mistake at Wal-Mart.

I still think stores ought to give you a discount for self-checkout. You're saving THEM money, and doing their work for them.

True. They can have 10 registers and only one employee watching.

I like self checkout because sometimes at the regular ones I get charged more for loose items like fruit & vegetables.

I HATE self checkout for a lot of reasons. Mainly, if I have MANY items, I don't relish having to juggle all of those items in one tiny area for bagging.

I don't mind self-checkout IF - the lines are short and I only have one or two items.

But one of the biggest reasons I hate self-checkout is the other customers - for reasons I can't figure, in addition to having to WAIT for a working self-checkout register - I have to deal with people who've decided to use self-checkout for two overflowing carts of groceries. And they suck at it.
WHY anyone would be so masochistic to subject themselves to that I can't guess.

So instead of it being the equivalent of a fast, express means of checking out - it has become an obscenely long line as people struggle to find the bar codes or look up their vegetables or try to open those plastic bags DESIGNED to be hard to open - and then of course, figure out how to manipulate 20 bags of groceries in an area designed for THREE.

This of course - because people do this, the regular checkers are scaled back to a minimum. A visit to WalMart that used to take 15 minutes is now three times that. GOOD reason to NOT shop there unless necessary.

I had the self-checkout at Weis yelling at me the other day because a had to remove a full bag from the bagging area so I could bag the last three items. I hit the "Skip Bagging" button and the system sent me to the payment page and I couldn't get back. I finally had to checkout twice.

Given the small space for holding bagged groceries (compared to the normal checkout counters) it seems pretty obvious that they are meant for only a few items at a time.

I'm with you, I don't understand why someone would want to do that with a giant cart (or two) filled with groceries, other than if they are trying to slip a few items across unnoticed among the clutter.

I never overfill the carts anyways, I don't have the patience to spend an hour in the store filling up multiple carts.

And off-topic, but does anyone remember that gameshow where you answered questions to earn time for shopping in the grocery store, then you attempted to get as expensive a cart full of groceries in the time allotted.

well, I dont know much about all of that, you see, I do my shopping at 7-11 with about 30 of my associate shoppers at 3 am. Its self check-out multiplied by 2, no swipe the scanner....just Cheetos, crates of diapers and beef jerky.

Self checkout sucks.

If items are bein stolen it's their own fault IMO.
They set up the system for it.

I use the self check when I have few items and just don't feel like standing in line. But I also dislike the plastic bags, so if I don't need to bag, I just check out, get the receipt and walk. For some reason, this triggers the door checkers... even if you have the receipt out and visible they still stop you because it's not bagged.

Me too. But ONLY if the area is fairly clear - I have no patience waiting in a LONG LINE just so I can check MYSELF out. Oddly enough, this is mitigated by a small number of FAST checkers. I qualify that, because I HAVE been in line with ones so slow I have actually wished I'd gone to self-checkout, even hating it as much as I do.

By comparison, ALDI checkers are so fast, I often cannot keep up.

The world should take a lesson from the Aldi checkout folks. They usually have everything scanned before I even get my bag in place.
Also, be sure to put the divider stick in place. Not long ago, the check out guy moved a bunch of my stuff up and left a big gap between the rest of it. The guy behind me didn't put the divider there so the checker started ringing up my other stuff with the other guys stuff. Lesson learned!

Yup. When I realized some of my tuff was missing, I went back to the checker and said to him, "that's mine and son on..." The guy behind me said, ya, only the bagels are mine. The checker got all confused about it. I told him that he left a gaping space in between my stuff and he retorted that the other guy was standing next to it, so he thought it was his. Me = Whatever, just fix it.

Okay....

I'm glad all these self-checkout horror stories are coming out. That way people will get out of my way when I'm using them.

When I go through the cashier I'm not typically watching what comes up as s/he scans everything, and in some stores you can't even see the individual scans. But when *I* scan it, I see every purchase and the price paid. A number of times I've caught the register not giving me credit for a BOGO or overcharging for items. And at Publix, if their machine fails to properly price your item, you get it free. When that item is a BOGO, you get both of them free.

So if you don't want to use self-checkout, simply don't. There's no need to demand that it not be available to me. Fascists.

There's a trick to it. Fill a bag, give it a couple of seconds for the landing to register the weight, then move the bag to your cart. Repeat until all items have been paid for and bagged. This works at both Publix and WalMart.

Just double check and make sure you got everything so you don't "accidentally" steal something.
