Ice dancing

The farm I grew up on had a large pond and winter ice skating parties with bonfires, chili and hot chocolate were the thing. Even though it was very rural, sometimes there would be 20+ neighborhood people skating on the pond when we'd have nice thick ice and decide it was a good night for a party. Late 1960s...

We kids played hockey on that pond. I wonder what happened to my old skates...
Thanks for the memories.... I got my first real kiss at one of those skating parties and a few other firsts as the winter went on! At our pond a few of the older people built a leanto with a woodstove. Damn we had good times there.

I could roller skate quite well, but ice skating was a whole other critter. After mastering just standing with the skates on I proceed to bust my ass and spent the next 30 minutes laying the ground work for what would become known as breakdancing.

Roller rinks. Another growing-up tradition gone. But we can forget about the 70's disco version.

We had a couple of nearby farm, and gravel pit ponds in the 70's that froze over a couple times. None of us had ice skates or hockey sticks, so we made do with tobacco sticks and chunks of coal for a puck.
