My facebook friends are failing me I think. They say walnut and I disagree. The hull is not really rough or sticky, they're small, and the shell is smooth. What do I have?

To be sure.. Can you take picture of a branch with the leaves..

Walnut leaves grow on stems shooting from branches with 10 or more leaves growing off of a stem.. The leaves usually fall in a stem, and not single leaves..

I think Hickory is more like a normal tree with individual leaves.

Would that be a Shellbark Hickory?

I have about 10 - 12 Walnut trees in my yard, and the husks are VERY similar.

The tree is in the woods and I can't figure out which tree it is. The edge of the woods is littered with mostly empty shells and the husks. I'm deciding if it's worth it to step into the woods and try to find the tree. There's bugs and stuff in there ya know!

Those are def hickory. We had one in the backyard as a kid, and my grandmother would make me pick them all up, shell and remove the meat so she could bake with them. Tastes alot like walnut.

Same type of "nut" and same genus of tree.. I do believe.

Now I'm not 100% sure I have Walnuts in my yard..

Hickory nuts (in the green casing) are about an inch and a half to two inches long. Walnuts are much larger, two to three inches, a bit more round, and leave that sticky on your fingers that turns black and doesn't come off (black walnuts, anyway).

Hickory nut hulls seperate into four sections when they're fully ripened, walnut hulls just kind of dry up and rot off.

These are a good bit smaller which is why I wasn't convinced that it was a walnut.

These do split!
