These thefts occur all the time. At some point, you'd think they'd shut those self service check out registers.
You can bet Walmart doesn't eat the loss but rather passes it on to the customers.

If they really wanted to catch these thief’s they would install cameras like casinos have. They have systems that will alert when they come back in the store again.

They do, cameras are all over the place, including the checkout itself. There is a video display at eye level where you can see your own image as you're checking out.

Walmart had Crappy cameras. Example of the poor imagery is the photos in their thread. My cheap home security system has better quality video.

Casinos have HD and recognize when someone that is banned enters the casino.

The last time I was in Walmart and used the self-checkout, there was a gal permanently stationed there to keep a live eye on the checkouts. I thought to myself "OK..so this is saving you employee pay money, how exactly?"

Generally, the untrained public is 10 times faster than one of their trained cashiers, especially the express checkout cashiers, and ONE person watching 10 - 12 self checkouts. so at least 10 - 20 times more people checked out in the same amount of time as a single cashier. AND I get my groceries bagged the way I want them.. no more crushed bread!!

BUT then you don't return your cart to a corral, ensuring they need somebody to wrangle shopping carts..

At Lowe's, the 4 self checkout stations replaced 4 cash registers.

I am the PT SCO attendant, other cashiers fill in the hours I am not there. The SCO terminals do need to have overrides done by the attendant, ours are older, think they got them when the Food Lion that was near the Walmart plaza went toes up.

Do have a regular cash register in case something goes wrong with one of the terminals, and I need to finish the transaction.

4 potential paychecks versus just one is where the savings arise.

BTW, Lowe's PIN pads do not work with wave to pay nor Apple or Google Pay, but Samsung sometimes works, but only at the regular cash registers. Best to have the physical card.
