I'm starting to think my cat is smarter than me

So, I have an office connected to my bedroom and there's also a set of french doors in my bedroom that exit onto my deck. My cat sometimes comes and sits just outside the doorway into my office, looking at me and if necessary meowing at me to get me to go open the door leading to the deck for him. I usually oblige him. He also likes to claim my office chair when I'm not in it.

A few months ago he started tricking me - he'd come to the office door and stare at me until I got up to go open the exterior door, then as I passed by him he'd run and jump in my office chair. Fair enough, he outwits me so he gets to keep the chair for a while.

But I'm not the absolute dullest tool in the shed, so I eventually adjust my response - when I see him sitting at the office door, I stand up but wait for him to run to the exterior door before I start walking away from the chair. Cool, this works, we seem to have an understanding now.

But then, about a week ago, he goes and ups the outwit ante. Now what he does is, he sits by the office door and waits for me to stand up, then runs to the exterior door, then when I arrive and reach for the door knob he runs back to the office and jumps in my chair. Of course, he doesn't do this every time - sometimes he actually wants to go outside. And he has one hell of a poker face, I can't usually tell.

So anyway, I've been outsmarted by my cat. :frown:

I wonder what he'll come up with if I start closing the office door behind me when I go to let him out.

That is an adorable story!!!
The solution is obvious! Buy another chair for you and then you can sit together!
Your cat is definitely smart! None of my cats ever did anything like this!

THis has nothing to do with cats, but, it reminded me of a parrot we used to have. Pretty Boy was a yellow naped amazon and mean as hell. We had a big cage for him in our spare bedroom. He considered this his room and he was particular about what shared the room with him. My husband bought his son a basketball, when the basketball wasnt being used, we kept it in the spare bedroom. One day we hear the parrot getting out of his cage, next thing we see is the basketball rolling out of the bedroom into the hallway and a couple minutes later, the bedroom door closes. We look at each like "what the hell just happened". I get the basketball, open the bedroom door again and roll the ball back into the bedroom. A few minutes later, the ball goes back into the hallway and the door closes again. This time, hubby puts the ball back into the bedroom and we stand in the hallway to see whats going on. That damn bird would climb out of his cage, roll the basket ball out the door with his head and then used his head to push the door shut. I dont know what is was about the basket ball, but he didnt want it in the room with him.

When you figure out how to outsmart your cat you can help me figure out how to train my dog not to eat his poop.

Just can't fix stupid. It is what it is. Humans, that is.

When people realize they are only indentured servants to whatever cat they take in, maybe the people will wake up and demand respect. From the cats they slave to.

But probably not. Can't fix stupid, and the cat knows it.:killingme

I have always been taught that love was a give and take thing? At least with humans?

Ah, but cats do not want their own chair - they want your chair. The one your butt has recently been in. The chair you want. If you switch and go sit in a different chair, they will want that chair.

Apollo is like that with food.
