In observance of BLM month, I have a few ideas....

As we know, the colleges and Universities discriminated from white people are known as HBCU's.

So, McDonalds should be HBGHJ's (Greasy Hamburger Joints)

Giant Food, HBGC, (Grocery Stores)

Maryland Government, HBS, (state)

Noodled it... sounds good to me.

I used like Black History Month when I was in school, I just don't like the way they've politicized it and made it divisive. I like any History month until people start being aholes about it.

Funny how they leave out the historical part about the hundreds of thousands of White men that died fighting to free them.

This is the sort of ahole stuff I was referring to.

Why does everything have to revolve around white saviors for you? Why can't we just learn about Black people accomplishments without some insecure white person jumping in with "Yabbut WE helped!"?

I have no problem making it ethnocentric. Non-whites do tend to get overlooked in the grand scheme of things and I think it's important for kids to see that you don't have to be white to be a success. That motivation is good for all of us. When I was a kid we had Native American week where we'd learn about various NA historical figures and cultures. I enjoy stuff like that because I learn things that normally wouldn't make the cut.

OMG! Off the deep end you go. Why should we be forced to learn, or have it in our faces everyday, about black history for a whole GD month anyway? When black people, or any person, does something substantial or obtains a great achievement, we hear of it in the news and in magazines, etc.. There is nothing so special about black people, as a whole group, the warrant an entire month of learning about their history anyway.

Still waiting for White history year. Because that's about how long it would take to discuss and learn all of Whites achievements. :duel:

Nobody is forcing you to do a damn thing. Why shouldn't I get it just because you don't like it, when it's not hurting you?

Except when someone doesn't follow your idealism, you mock. Because you claim I am a White saviour, (which I am not), when it is a fact that there were hundreds of thousands of deaths of White men to free the slaves, and not just during the Civil War either. Which is one of the most important aspects to black history. As well as the fact that during colonial times, the Colonies had a great aversion to the slave trade, and many even banned it as well as banning the importation of slaves. Very early on, Congress even banned the importation of slaves into any American ports. If were not for England pushing it, the Colonies would have had nothing to do with it. Now, there some real black history.

Actually, since we had no choice to listen about Black History & had to do a report on a different Great Black Hope or fail a class over it, then yes, we were forced to learn about it.

And I only learned about the hundreds of whites who were beaten, burned out, & lynched AFTER the Civil War by the Democrat KKK during the Tulsa & Rosewood incidents, who died defending the right of blacks to live & do business freely, from my own research...
It would go a LONG way to repair the racial damage in this Country if accolades were afforded to the whites who fought & died for the advancement of freedom & equality of blacks before, during & especially AFTER the Civil War....there were many whites on those front lines, but we don't get to hear about them...because the entire month is solely about pushing a Political Agenda, not about appreciating accomplishments of black people.

Hell, in MY short time on this earth, I watched Eli Whitney have his race changed 3 times in the History books & Encyclopedias. He started out white savior, in my 1956 version Encyclopedia Brittanica at home, then, by the 1982 Encyclopedia Americana, he was a black slave who invented the cotton Gin, all to ease the burdens placed upon his brethren, and by 2012, he was back to a white slave owner who only invented the cotton gin to increase the profits of evil white men...

And speaking of black history, regarding the oh so celebrated Harriet Tubman, and the underground railroad, (which the State of Maryland fawns over and promotes even having a park dedicated to her) ... Her efforts would have never seen the light of day had it not been for the many White people that assisted her along that route. There can be no black history without White history.

I actually looked forward to a couple of the history months, soul food for BHM, lumpia for PHM, wursts for GHM and ham and cabbage for IAM. Wish we would have had Jewish history month, I could go to town on some knishes.

How on earth did that scar you for life?

It's interesting because I didn't grow up with this sort of racial hate thing. It's never been part of my life. But Larry Gude went to high school in Laurel and he said black and white people were always punching each other out. He told me about "sundown towns", which I had never heard of. Said no white kid would ever be friends with a black kid.

So this is a Maryland thing. Probably because you all never got cinnamon rolls with your chili - makes you mean.

Where did I ever say it scarred me for life? I view it more as time wasted in my life....an interruption to celebrating the greatness of my own people, nothing more... As a Idahoan...or wherever you're from, I don't expect you to get it...it was a Civil War thing...your people were busy eradicating Native Americans and eating family members as soon as you saw snow flurries - talk about mean...

Look, when a President violates the Constitution...The Law of the Land...and imprisons your entire State Legislature and strips away your citizens rights, come talk to me ...until then, keep singing kumbaya with those Natives you weren't busy eradicating...

In the 39 years in the classroom....I tried desperately to make sure very diverse characters were highlighted throughout the entire year. I did a lengthy study of African American and Women's contributions to the Revolutionary War. Spoke about the Full blooded Mohawk on Grant's staff, included fascinating accounts of the Exodusters in Kansas...or a Black woman stage driver in the Upper plains...Bulletin Boards by Leading Black Christians & Commentators...
And?
I still got sneering criticism for not doing enough in February.
Ok...I will NOT shift an entire curriculum just for racial glorification. That would be counterproductive, and unbiblical. BUT,...that was one of the motivations to force me to quit. I did.

My advice? Read, research, enjoy the quest, promote true heroism, self sacrifice, patriotism...and throw the rest in the trash.

Your assignment: Read about the two massive fights between Max Schmeling vs Joe Louis in the 1930's.
Then...trace their lives up into the 1970's...and the relationship that they took to their graves. Inspirational.
