Indiana University Students Mistake Priest for KKK Member

Residential hall advisor Ethan Gill quickly wrote an email to his students, warning them of the “threat” on campus: “There has been a person reported walking around campus in a KKK outfit holding a whip. Because the person is protected under first amendment rights, IUPD cannot remove this person from campus unless an act of violence is committed. Please PLEASE PLEASE be careful out there tonight, always be with someone and if you have no dire reason to be out of the building, I would recommend staying indoors if you’re alone.”

Later in the evening, Gill was forced to retract his warning on his Facebook page, where he clarified that the purported Klansman was actually just an innocent priest dressed in liturgical garments. The “whip” turned out to be the clergyman’s robe-like belt that was tied around his waist.

“This is what happens when there is miscommunication,” Gill wrote. “So what happened tonight goes like this: a person saw white robes and what looked to them like a weapon, got scared (rightfully so), warned people, warned staff, which in turn caused me to warn my residents because I need to look out for my residents, which in turn made it spread.”

“Then my residents, terrified, come running to me, saying yeah the report must be true, they saw him and couldn‘t believe there was a klansmember [sic] with a whip,” he explained. “And I see this picture. It’s a priest. With a rosary.”

So while I was attending CSM I took a sociology class, and the very first day the professor threw up a picture.

Hooded penitents.jpg

And asked the class "what are these?"

And of course many in the classroom said "KKK".

Which just goes to show you what cultural lenses can do.

If a spanish person saw a KKK member without context they would probably think they were a hooded penitent.

Freaked me out a few years back when exploring a small Spanish town during Lent. Turned a corner and wham. My first reaction was, "What the hell did I just get myself into!"

I thought you said that happened in Drayden.

That was a different time.

BTW - Can Drayden be considered a "small town"? A town should be more than just a Post Office. At least Tall Timbers has a Post Office, store, and bar (all in the same building).

Scotland is one Street and a post office so yes.

Franky it's one of the things I love about Maryland culture. The little towns that are just a clump of houses.

Remember the old Swann's t-shirts?....."Downtown Piney Point, just across from the Federal Building"

Not to completely hijack this thread, but coming from WMd, I would call Scotland a village. A town would imply a little bit of a business center. Ridge would be considered a town.

Okay. No more discussion about towns from me.

That's ok, the thread doesn't have much in the way of value. It's cultural differences. It's not 'anti religion".

Frankly this could have happened at a baptist college as well, because they wouldn't be exposed to the full liturgical robe either.

Actually it could be even worse.

"OH GOD, CATHOLIC ON CAMPUS! CATHOLIC ON CAMPUS!"

Smashing the glass on the "Break in case of anti-christ" wall mountings etc.

I wonder how many klansmen this kid has ever seen and how many folks in liturgical dress?
Being Indiana, could be both, yea?

Apparently they've had klan members come to the school before so probably more of the former then the latter.

Keep in mind this is the specific liturgical dress of a specific denomination that may not be common.

I'm trying to envision a reality where bogeymen are real, how this person perceives the world around them, Muslim 'dress', 'redneck' dress, 'thug' dress. I mean, do they go diving under the pillow on a regular basis, furtively texting an SOS and 'call out the gendarmes' every time they see someone who is different from them, especially dangerous stereotypes? Clearly, they saw something that was no there. Clearly, they just :jameo: for no reason other than what is going on in their head.

They saw a man in a white robe with a deep cowl in the back.

If you don't know that dominicans wear white, then it's an easy mistake to make.

Why? Because the picture of the monk and friar is often of the Franciscan or brown robe orders. Friar Tuck?
