Nickel is right - it is very difficult to adopt in the US. We are not interested in an infant and most kids in the foster care system are not available for adoption until they are 10+ years old. US tries very hard to continue to reunite the kids with their biological families, no matter how bad the situation. We originally looked into becoming an adoptive/foster family. However, I soon realized that I could not handle having to continually interact with the biological family and probably ultimately give the child back. We have a biological son and we do not want to adopt a child older than he to maintain the birth order and for other reasons....Finding a child in the foster system between the ages of 2-6yrs is practically impossible - we have investigated many states. I know we will face many challenges with an international adoption but I don't think they are any more "high risk" than what we would face with an older child bounced around in the foster system here. There are over 700,000 children in orphanages in Russia that need homes too!
