invisible fence

Just gettin by
I called an invisible fence company and made an appointment for someone to come to my house for an estimate. My dog, Zoe, is a mixed breed we adopted from the "pound". Well my dog is protective of her space like any good dog should be and was barking at him. The guy was AFRAID of dogs!! So of course she sensed that and sounded even more fierce. Well this particular company will not sell you a fence to an "aggressive dog" because of possible risk to someone coming on to your property and getting bitten. Has anyone else had this experience? suggestions.... p.s. she has never bitten anyone and will run if someone runs toward her.

I would call another company and keep the dog inside for the visit.

I have had Invisible Fence for 10+ years and have never had a problem like that. But.....I know about a year ago the business was bought by someone else and I have not really had to deal with them except for the battery program. Good luck.

The systems are very simplistic to install.
The only "work related" spots you will have to contend w/ is the areas where you need/want the wire to go underground (driveway, sections of the yard, ect).
Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, ect, have them.
Save some money-- buy one & install it yourself

I have a split rail fence running the perimeter of my property on 2 sides. The other 2 sides is woods. The wire is run under the bottom rail of the fence and on top the ground in the woods. The woods side has since burried itself over the years w/ leaves, sticks, ect..

The driveway was the only area that I went underground w/ the wire..

Installed it nearly 10 years ago.

Did you tell her to be quiet? If you did and she didn't listen, then you need to train her better. It's fine for dogs to bark to protect "their" property, but they should listen if you tell them to stop. If she is aggressive, then I would put up a solid fence. Why take the chance that she will run after someone?

I have the wireless fence. Link to one on eBay
Transmitter sits on top of the poured foundation in the ceiling of the unfinished basement, facing the backyard. Dog learned really quick. He can go all the way around the house (I have the daimeter set at about 1/2 power which fits our yard good) and up into the backyard a ways, but can only go about 4' beyond the sidewalk out front before being shocked. He is much happier now that he car circle the house. We haven't left him out on it when we went anywhere overnight yet, but we have started leaving him out when we leave for a couple hours. I like it a lot.

Info for DYI

I just bought a house where the previous owners had installed the invisible fence themselves. After my dogs ran off I learned that there was a break in the line somewhere causing it to fail. I've walked the property line and could not determine where the brake is. So I called the company to pay the $ to have it repaired. Surprize - they won't service it because it wasn't installed professionally. Now my dogs are in a kennel. Glad to see the link on here for the wireless model.

If you want to see one in person, they carry them at Petco. Replacement batteries are much cheaper on eBay.

I have invisible fence and a dog that is like yours but would bite(nip) if a stranger just came on the property without as being around,, invisible fence never had any issue with that. I used the one out of Crofton.

There is a way to test the wire to find out where the break is..

I just don't remember how off the top of my head, I'm sure someone in here can provide details..

The company that makes the fence that Ott & I put around our yard makes some sort of thing you can buy to find a break. Our fence has a tone on the transmitter that signals when there is a break in the wire. We've had that happen a couple of times..but have been lucky enough to find the break. Our wire is not buried though.

Screw the fence co., buy one and put it in yourself. Me and ex put one in for Bailey years ago when they were a new company. Not that hard to do. If your property is all woods you can just lay the wire down. You only bury it so you mow over it or something like that.

None the less, it is still risky. No matter what people say if a dog wants to get through an invsible fence badly enough it will.. I don't think invs fences offer the same piece of mind a real fence does.
Also, what if a young kid scared her and came into the yard and she then decided to bite? Just because she hasn't yet does NOT mean she wont. She clearly has the potential too.. (as does you friendly lab next door type) She sounds fearful and would probably feel safer when she can SEE an enclousure and know she is safe.. a 'shock' with a fence might not be the best idea for a fearful dog either.
