Is it illegal to leave your car running unattended

I have a neighbor who leaves his car running in the morning anywhere from 15-45 mins. It is very loud and annoying. This goes on between 5am-7am Monday-Friday. Not sure if this is illegal or not.

I believe it is but don't have the back up to support my statement. I believe there was a thread on it.

It is, but I think there is an exception for remote start.

The fine is $50.

When I called the Calvert Non-Emergency number he seemed like he did not want to say if it was illegal or not. He just said something about using a noise meter. It could be a noise violation.

Your neighbour needs to install glasspacks and aim his tailpipes towards your house.

Illegal? I don't know. Stupid? Most assuredly. Obnoxious? It is if it bothers the neighbors.
It's kind of stupid to make glaring generalities. My remote start starts the car, but if the key isn't in place the first time you try to make it move it kills the engine. You can't put in gear, step on the brake or even open the hood without killing the engine. Also the doors are locked and unless you use the remote you set off the alarm.

Leaving a car running and unattended on a public street, highway, or public parking area is a violation of the State of Maryland Vehicle Law, Article 21 Section 1101 (a). The penalty for this violation is a $60 fine and one point on your driving record.
They did this a few years ago. Stupid law, but then a lot of folks get their car stolen this way.

You seriously called the police on your neighbor for warming up their car on a cold morning?

:yeahthat:

So instead of prosecuting and punishing the thugs for stealing them, they punish otherwise law-abiding citizens for "enticing" thugs to steal. :duh:

You've got to remember 90+% of their posts from this year have been noise complaints about their neighbors - Cars, motorcycles, fireworks....

You could always "relocate" it for him.

In My Opinion
I skip right on past those southern Md hick town police and go right to the white house.
he is violating green laws.

Excessive idling leads to premature main bearing failure (except diesel) . Recommendation for newer cars (post fuel injection) is to start the car and immediately start driving. It will warm up faster, save fuel, save vehicle wear.

If I remember from last year, tickets were handed out in Calvert County for parked, running vehicles with no driver, even if it was locked.

I'm glad my neighbors aren't like that, and neither am I. The guy across the street cranks up classic rock when he's doing his yard work. Assorted dogs bark in the night. I have parties until the wee hours on the deck and around the firepit. Another guy across the way holds beer and poker parties in his garage most Friday and Saturday nights - AND he's a metal fan. Hell, there's an elementary school practically in my back yard.

As far as I'm aware, no one in my neighborhood cares about a little noise.

Does it matter if the car is on your private property. Are these rules only for public streets, etc?

If there is frost on my windshield I usually leave my car running for a few minutes.
