Is it illegal to leave your car running unattended

Does it matter if the car is on your private property. Are these rules only for public streets, etc?

If there is frost on my windshield I usually leave my car running for a few minutes.

Uh..... you have no "private" property, you rent it from the Govt and pay your rent in taxes every year.........

So instead of prosecuting and punishing the thugs for stealing them, they punish otherwise law-abiding citizens for "enticing" thugs to steal. :duh:

The other concern (besides the obvious 'some gutter snipe will steal you car') is the concern the car will 'jump' into gear and roll back out of your drive into the street. Remember when everyone believed a Toyota would gun the engine and kill the brakes? Or when an Audi would jump into gear and kill you in your own garage? Nanny states love these stories.

You seriously called the police on your neighbor for warming up their car on a cold morning?

When he revs his engine to start it and then revs it again to leave and you can hear it from a mile away that is a problem. Especially at 5am! He does not live next door. I can hear his car idling from a few houses away.

Which is why the popo told you to get a noise level, no doubt. If the exhaust is so loud it can be heard a few doors down the block, it's too loud for street driving (but then, when did the popo recently stop any jackwagon with a loud exhaust).

Tell him how you feel and ask him to find a way to reduce the amount of time it sits there and runs. Evidently it's not too loud or he has been lucky so far that he hasn't received a ticket for loud exhaust; in any event, bring your issue to him and make him aware

Excessive idling leads to premature main bearing failure (except diesel) . Recommendation for newer cars (post fuel injection) is to start the car and immediately start driving. It will warm up faster, save fuel, save vehicle wear.

If I remember from last year, tickets were handed out in Calvert County for parked, running vehicles with no driver, even if it was locked.

I've seen DC news stations have segments about it when the cops will patrol an apartment/townhouse complex, ticketing any running vehicle with no owner present.

I'm glad my neighbors aren't like that, and neither am I. The guy across the street cranks up classic rock when he's doing his yard work. Assorted dogs bark in the night. I have parties until the wee hours on the deck and around the firepit. Another guy across the way holds beer and poker parties in his garage most Friday and Saturday nights - AND he's a metal fan. Hell, there's an elementary school practically in my back yard.

As far as I'm aware, no one in my neighborhood cares about a little noise.

We don't. At least not too much.

To all of those people who don't mind a "little noise" hopefully this neighbor moves next to you. Yes I have complained on here before about this same neighbor shooting off mortars at 3am in the morning. This same neighbor has no problems calling the police to complain about being "harassed" by other neighbors. I have small children who dictate my sleeping schedule and I have no problem with this. I have an issue with my neighbor dictating when I can sleep. If I brought up anything to do with him warming his car up then he would just do it even more. That is what kind of person he is.

I have a neighbor who leaves his car running in the morning anywhere from 15-45 mins. It is very loud and annoying. This goes on between 5am-7am Monday-Friday. Not sure if this is illegal or not.

From the past (search "car starters" for example), the answer you are looking for is "YES" it is illegal to have your car running unless you are either with your car (I believe inside it or outside it, not 100% sure on that) or you have a car started installed that will disable the vehicle unless the key or transmitter on some cars is in use before putting the vehicle in gear. If you put the vehicle in gear without one of these it should shut the engine off.

Can you install security flood lights on your house that will shine into his windows all night?

Really, you called the police on your neighbor for warming up his car before you went over to talk to him about it? I hope he does a giant burn out in your yard.
