Is the St. Mary's Today editor and publisher Ken Rossignol a racist?

Watched it on the news last night and chuckled that they would give the time of day to Rossignol or anything that he prints.

It is so funny that you should ask that. I had a St. Mary's today delivered (to the foot of my driveway) this morning. So I picked it up and read it. I saw that cartoon and thougt it was racist. There is a lot of crime in somd that is committed by our very own folk (white and black).

It had the opposite effect on me...I cringed at the thought that he's getting some of the attention that he so craves...:jameo: It's as if he's finally hit the jackpot or something because the news media in a major market found out about our dirty little secret...

Brandon Diggs says he was deeply offended when he picked up a copy of the Saint Mary's Today, a weekly paper and saw what he believes is a racist editorial cartoon. It depicts three African American men as thugs, carrying weapons and remarking "so many stores, so little time." Another questions, "which way to St. Mary's County?"

I guess they consider that racist but look at what has happened lately and in the past. What is not true about that comment? Can't handle the truth I guess.

Rossignol says in his paper, no one's off-limits, including so-called "rednecks, geezers, gays and bozo cops."

He has been criticized in the past for putting racist slants on his crime coverage. I think he's telling the truth in the quote above.

Still, treating all groups with the same contempt doesn't make the contempt acceptable. In my view, it just shows that he's a mean-spirited person who doesn't like anyone, including himself.

That story made me stay up late last night, went out at 10pm to get milk at the WaWa in Charlotte Hall and saw the television trucks set up in the parking lot, asked the clerk what they were doing, said something about story from Leonardtown said it was WUSA so I stayed up to watch the 11 'clock news to find out the scope, she didnot know what they were going to report, I wasted my time, cost me an hour of sleep. :jameo:

Well, he's right about that. The paper could be considered not only racist, but sexist, elitist, homophobic, and every other politically incorrect sentiment. I don't think people read the SMT for unbiased news with hearts and smiley faces scribbled in the margins.

If the influx of thuggery is predominantly caused by blacks from up the road, I see no problem with Ken being honest about it. But I'd like to see the stats on that before forming an opinion.

That's exactly what I thought. I was perfectly content to think that nobody outside this county knew about that bastard.

There is somewhat of a truth to some of the articles he writes.

For so long, So. Md. has operated with immunity from the harsh city life and people that plagued DC/PG and Baltimore. Now that the area is in ruin, and So. Md. is developing, this attracts pro criminals. The people down here are easy prey. You can thank your state senators and governor for that.... (taking away the right to carry a concealed handgun, the lack of a castle doctrine in this state).

The reality of it is, its only going to get worse. You have 2 choices. Move, or defend yourself. You will watch as the police departments in So. Md. are easily overpowered by the true professional criminals that have years of experience in committing violent crime, and will continue to do so. Not to mention, the influx in criminals will easily overwhelm the justice system in the 3 countys considered to be So. Md.

Its not just in So. Md. either. Its in Howard County. Its in Northern Maryland. Developing counties where the citizens are just denying the fact that "it can't happen here" well its coming and it will. Unless you are able to defend yourself. You must push for that right in Annapolis. Trust me, if the police departments of DC/PG Co. and Baltimore could never get a handle on crime do you actually think the good ole CCSO boys will be able to save you? Haha, just buy yourself a casket now.

In a sad way, the St. Mary's today is telling the truth about what goes on. But perhaps not in the best way to go about doing so. Its true that the businesses in Charlotte Hall have been robbed by crackheads camping out in the woods area nearby in "tree forts" claiming to be from Temple Hills and SE DC area. Its true that there has been an open air prostitution market at some un named hotels in St. Mary's County. The cleanup of Lexington Park is short lived ladies and gentlemen, the beltway crime ring will soon have no limits.
It is also true that the newspapers in So. Md. have avoided the issue for so long because they don't want to push away would be homeowners, and potential buyers. They don't want you to turn on the police scanner and hear what really goes on. Or maybe the fact that the police are having a hard time dealing with the problem, because they lack those Big City skills... Organized drug traffickers vs's redneck police department? I think I know who's going to win that easily. Homelessness will rise. Most cops in So. Md. will tell you that nowadays theres no limit to what they will see. Cracktrade has exploded. I mean it was just years ago that weed was the only thing kids were smokin, that and just drinking, now its PCP, crack, coke, heroin, oxy. no limit to what is flooded into our communities.

Any living being has 2 options in an enviroment like this. Adapt or die. That means either adapt by making common sense laws and empower the people to do something about it, or you might as well move to Va. Move out, and let the crackheads win. The police cannot win this battle, its the citizens that must win it.

I haven't seen the cartoon.

What makes it racist?

I tried to find a print version of the cartoon, but couldn't. I gave the paper to someone on the bus so I can't even scan it for you. If you watch the news link it shows the cartoon. I just feel it is racist because not all crimes are committed by black thugs from DC--there are white thugs from DC too. Not all the crime being committed is from blacks. That is the point I was trying to make.

It reminds me of a comment my father-in-law made a few years ago after he was speaking to my nephew-in-law who was in jail. "He just told me there are more whites in the jail than blacks, isn't that unbelievable." What I considered unbelievable is that 3/4 of in-laws weren't in jail. :lmao:

So, I'm guessing the cartoon somehow depicts black criminals doing something against the law.

Now lemme ask you this: If it was a cartoon depicting all white criminals, what would your reaction have been?

Remember this is a dumbass cartoon. In order not to offend anyone do we have to include 1 white criminal, 1 black criminal, 1 asian criminal, 1 latino criminal and 1 semetic criminal in every cartoon so that we can have the actual diversity explained.

I think you and many others, are seeing racism where there is none. It's just a stupid cartoon.

Suppose the cartoonist is black. Would it still be racist?

The majority of Washington DC is black. If you're going to draw a character from DC, criminal or otherwise, chances are the character would be black. Much like if you drew a character from DeKalb, Illinois, or Des Moines Iowa, the character would likely be white.

I have an opinion, you have an opinion. I am not going to keep going back and forth with you. I still say it is racist. That doesn't mean I am right, it is just a "dumbass" opinion I have. There may be black people who see it and are not offended. Yes, even if the cartoonist were black, I would still consider it racist. Yes, if it were all white criminals I would be just as offended.

Sounds like some one has an acute case of white guilt.

What back and forth? I was only having a conversation with you. I thought that's why you were here, for conversation.

Sounds like you took what I said as hostility.

I wasn't being hostile. I was just talking.

But if you don't want to talk, then you just have yourself a good day.
Take care now.

No, sir(?), I didn't consider it hostile, its just that all the back and forth and we are not going to change each other's opinion are we? I actually enjoyed the discussion and look forward to future discussions. :smoochy:

ps didn't mean to offend you--honest!
