Is this even legal?

Hi! I need some input, please. We have a neighbor who is the neighborhood pain. We have all had dealings with him on one matter or another. For instance, one neighbor burns limbs or branches that fall in his yard. The pain will call the fire department. We all have at least one acre. The man doesnt like smelling the smoke. He has reported every neighbor that has a dog with excess barking. None bark excessively. Not one.

Well, I was just in our backyard and looked across into his yard. He has mounted a camera to look into our yard! It is one of those wildlife cameras, I think. It has an antenna. Is this even legal?? I think he is trying to catch our dog barking so he can record it. We have talked with the animal warden about this guy because he has reported us several times. Only one dog really barks and he is a beagle. He usually only barks when this man is outside because he appears threatening, I'm sure.

Anyway, is this even legal to have a camera watching someone's yard from another yard? It kind of creeped me out.

We have tried to be good neighbors - even took cookies over when they first moved in several years ago. His wife is very sweet, but he is just weird. Several large trees from his property have fallen on our new fence. Instead of bothering them with it, we fixed the fence ourselves. We don't like to stir up trouble.

As to the beagle, he is a real sweetie. My husband wants to find him a new home because he chases our cats and scares them. I don't want our cats to live in fear either, but am scared to find him a new home because you don't know how people will treat him. Anyone want to adopt a sweet, couch potato beagle who hates cats, please let me know.

Thanks!

It's different if its mounted and watching his home entry and/or windows. But the cameras would not be pointing at your place if that was the case.

I don't think he can legally point his camera at your place.. To me its no different than a peeping tom.. Today's cameras have zoom capability and for all you know he could be looking in your bedroom window! I would call the Sheriffs dept.

Wow, after reading this i am so thankful for my neighbors. The biggest complaint i have ever received from them was one time my neighbor stopped by and asked for a beer, I handed him one and he went, i don't normally drink this crap, but i am thirsty, he drank it and didn't call the police on me for serving him sub par beer.

I love my neighbors, they are all old and quiet. They don't bother me and I don't bother them. The house to my right is owned but empty, they come down from up north a few times a year and stay a few days. They'll never sell, so that's a good thing.

I checked with the Sherriff's office and they said that it was legal. She asked if he could see in our windows and I told her I didn't think so. She agreed it was kinda creepy though.

I'm thinking I should put something up on my side of the property that will block his vision. I wonder if that is legal. LOL.

Absolutely, put up a spotlight on your property that shines directly into his camera lens, tit for tat. If he doesn't like it tell him to take down his camera.

But what if you had a pool or hot tub, then could you claim he was a peeping tom? Do you have kids? If so, how do you know he isn't watching your kids? This is really weird!
What is he doing? Checking on how long you leave your dog out? Are you sure it is a camera?

Yep a 500 watt spotlight with a snoot. You can fabricate the shoot with heavy duty tinfoil and paper towel role, then remove the paper as this will get hot.

Another method is to use several tin cans with both ends cut out and tape together with HVAC foil tape.

Super concentrated spot light.

Figure out the model of camera and the wireless transmitter frequency and method. He is using a receiver to see the video from camera. Send the religion channel his way. Might help him!!

We don't have a pool or hot tub so that won't work. We have kids but they are almost grown. We think he is trying to videotape one of our dogs barking so he could prove it in court. He has called animal control several times on everyone in the neighborhood that has a dog. Yes, the dogs do bark sometimes but by no means excessively. He just wants total quiet. His wife told me that they had moved here because their former neighborhood was so loud. They just had to get away.

It is definitely a camera. One of our neighbors is a deputy here. He is gonna check it out and give us suggestions on what we can do legally about it.

This is definitely weird. We've lived here over 22 years and have never had a problem until these people moved in.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions on dealing with this.

We have no pool or hot tub, but we do have teen girls. The location of the camera is such that he can't see too much because it points toward the back of our shed.

We think he is watching our dogs to catch them barking or climbing over the fence. Our one beagle does escape from time to time, but not often. As for barking, they do bark sometimes but certainly not often enough to be a nuisance anymore than the other dogs in the neighborhood do. Our dogs sleep in the house so there is no night time barking at all.

It is just so frustrating!
