I read this bit yesterday - actually read the whole thing (it's lots of chapters). I think it fairly well describes them.

The thing about these studies or whatever they are is that they remind me of all the "studies" and whathaveyou about Americans, and I'm always going, "I don't know anyone who thinks or does that." Polls showing that everyone hates Trump...despite him literally just winning a decisive presidential victory.

Judging, teasing and even hating America is a central part of the Canadian identity, and forms a persistant bias that runs through most aspects of Canadian society and culture. For various reasons, the default position of a great many Canadians is that America, Americans, and American things are generally bad, and need to be opposed.

This is not my experience with Canadians, even in their own country. They tease us like we tease them, eh? It's not a virulent hatred. And if they think American things are so bad, they shouldn't purchase/consume them, and tariffs would be a moot point.

It's like Buzzfeed's obsession with articles about how much foreigners hate Americans and how the US sucks. It's like, okay, then why do they keep coming here?

"Oh, it's so much better in my country!"
Great, then stay your ass home.

"Oh, Americans come to our country and do all these rude things!"
Yeah? Do they burn your cities and kill your children?

I've interacted with a number of foreign tourists in my travels, and they are always enthused about the US and Americans. They are pleasantly surprised because the propaganda machines have led them to believe they'd be attacked and met with hostility. Monello will back me up on this.

So I think that "guide" is a whole lot of bullshit, much like Reddit doesn't accurately reflect the mores and attitudes of Americans. Foreigners who only see what's on CNN are not getting an accurate representation.

Well - written by a Canadian. I know a lot of Canadians also - one I meet with regularly with my friends. And my father's family comes from Upper Ontario. It's not a seething hate - it's just a general but polite undercurrent of dislike. Kind of like Brits have with the French.

No - but after 9/11, they were polled and agreed with Chretien - "the Americans had it coming".

As have I. And in their own countries as you have. And some of the "complaints" are consistent - "Americans think they're better than us - Americans stick their noses where they don't belong - American military is everywhere - they don't know anything about us".

And you are also right - they do have a fascination with us. But THEY DO believe what they see on TV - and movies - and "CNN" as you say. I've met many who come here and wonder - how come Americans don't all have guns like in the movies? Where's all the crime, and serial killers? Why aren't they all as stupid as they are on TV? They are often pleasantly surprised, when they meet actual Americans - you know, much like libs from big cities met actual conservatives during the pandemic, and found that they weren't anything like what they've been told.
