Lease????

What common sense businessman (woman) would rather deal with the hassles of an empty building in this economy...rather than lower a lease & keep the cash flow going for another year or two.

Jaspers is a little pricy ( I've been 3-4 times) but the food is always delicious & service exemplary. C'mon owner...show some smartz....extend the lease, keep dozens employed, and keep a nice restaurant open.

I have to wonder if there is more to the story...:coffee:

one day the dark will end
This is why: Looks like Landlord wants MORE $$$$$$$ to renew lease.

Too bad as that building will stay empty for a LONG time!
a little pricey but good!!!
And how many more will be left jobless in a sucky ecomony?

Recieved in an email:

October 12, 2011

Dear Guests:

It has been our pleasure to serve you over the last four years! The loyalty of our guests has continued to make the restaurant both popular and profitable.

We would love to stay and continue to serve our many friends but we have been unable to renegotiate our lease.

It is with heavy heart that, as negotiations have reached an impasse, our last day of business will be Monday, October 31, 2011.

Again, we want to thank all our guests for the overwhelming support you have given us. We are so proud to have been able to be a part of this wonderful community. We look forward to returning to the Prince Frederick area in the future.

Sincerely,

The Jasper's Family"

I can't believe the original lease was already up as that is a fairly large building, and new construction. That is normally a 10 year deal at lease.I read that as they wanted the landlord to lower the lease, and they refused. As a landlord, it has to suck to build a building as a long term investment for a restaurant like that, and then have them come back a few years later and push you to lower the rent or go out of business.

I guess it is a business decision for the landlord. On one hand, the restaurant signed a contract they should abide buy it. The flipside is some money is better than no money. My guess is that landlord has known this was coming and already has someone lined up. That is one of the few free standing restaurants in the area most any national chain could move in to.

Too bad we're losing Jaspers. It was a decent place. I was surprised to hear the only one left is the Largo site. I was wondering why they closed the ones in Greenbelt and Crofton, and found this:

What happened to Jaspers Restaurant? - Crofton, MD Patch

If that's right, the one in Crofton may reopen after renovations and the one in Greenbelt closed due to fire...don't know about that one. I've been to all 4 locations over the years and the one in Greenbelt had the best design IMO. We used to wait in line to get in that place when it opened in the early 80's -- great place.

I called Jaspers last night to place a to-go order and they have a recording stating that they're closing 10/31 but hope to reopen in the area soon. Couldn't get through to anyone to place the order, oh well. Sad to see them go, we really like the food there.

They do such a beautiful job of decorating for Christmas too and we always brought family visiting from out of state there. Wonder what, if anything, will be there to replace them? It's a pretty building, hope it doesn't just sit vacant and go to crap.

:cds: Only place in town that would serve a Mojito! (really the only place in town of any size that is really geared toward a grown-up crowd.)

I had heard from a pretty good source that the name of the place would be changing, so unless that deal fell through the building may be reopened soon under different management.

That's true, at 37 I sometimes feel "old" when I go out to bars around here (especially the green turtle) but never felt that way at Jaspers.

I had heard a few months ago, from an area restuarant owner we've gotten to know, that Jaspers may be closing but I was hoping it was just rumor.

Pretty sure the building in Crofton has a new owner.

I'm with you on feeling old at Green Turtle (and almost anywhere else in PF) Plus everything else in town is too much of a family dinner atmosphere to really feel like you are out for an evening.

I had talked to someone at the bank that holds the note (I guess on the building). They said the name was going to change and even said what the new name would be (though I've forgotten). Doesn't mean that deal hasn't fallen through though.

As a small business owner, I often read articles about *surviving the recession*and have been in attendance at meetings where this has been brought up. Most advice includes trying to renegotiate the lease for a lower rent. Many feel *it never hurts to ask*.

DiGiovanni's used to be good. What else is good there?

P Fred Stoney's sucks. I keep giving them chances, but I am done.

Is that the place that always has coupons for buy one dinner get one free?

When I see those types of coupons it just gives me a bad vibe, most really good restaurants dont need to get you in the door w/a coupon ya know.
