Brad Jewitt, Congressional Candidate in Maryland’s Fifth District, attacked his opponent, Steny Hoyer, today for votes he cast last week against Maryland’s working families – votes, asserted Jewitt, that are “out of touch” with the needs of those in the Fifth Congressional District.

“At the same time Steny Hoyer voted to pocket more of our money for himself, he voted against legislation which would have made it easier for Maryland’s working families to make ends meet. He voted against giving tax relief to families with children, against reducing taxes on low-income families, and against tax relief for married couples,” charged Jewitt. Hoyer was one of only 65 members to vote against tax relief and fairness for his constituents.

Last week, Congress voted to give itself a $4,000 pay raise. The amendment Hoyer voted against would have required Congress to take a vote on the pay raise. In the absence of a vote, the pay raise became automatic. During the same period last week, Mr. Hoyer voted against a plan to reduce taxes on Maryland’s working families. The plan extended the $1,000 child tax credit, the 10% bracket, and relief to married couples.

“Maryland’s working families need tax relief so they can afford the demands placed on them to provide for healthcare, transportation, food, clothing, and housing for their families,” Jewitt said. “What Maryland’s working families don’t need is the fattening of Steny Hoyer’s wallet.”

“Hoyer’s votes against our families demonstrate just how out of touch he is with voters in this area. Is it any surprise he spends most of his time these days outside our district and traveling around the country promoting other politicians?” asked Jewitt.

According to a recent article, Steny Hoyer plans to visit over 40 Congressional Districts around the country between Labor Day and Election Day trying to build a majority in Congress for the Democrat Party. “It’s time we had a Congressman focused on representing families in the fifth district – not career politicians with values contrary to our own,” declared Jewitt.

In 1993 – the last time Democrats controlled Congress – taxes were raised on social security benefits, intelligence funding was slashed after the first attack on the World Trade Center, and Maryland’s working families received the largest tax increase in history.

Brad Jewitt is a U.S. Marine and the former Mayor of Berwyn Heights, Maryland. As the next Congressman, Mr. Jewitt’s goal is to improve the quality of life within Maryland’s Fifth District by removing barriers to small business growth and finalizing the President’s tax cuts, improving our systems of transportation and education, and enhancing national/regional security. In preparation for the campaign, Jewitt resigned his Federal job in order to focus his “attention full-time on the needs of the district.”

Yet another reason to vote for Jewitt. I have no problem with him getting a raise, as I have said before, but I have a def. problem with him voting against extending the child credit, tax bracket and marriage penalty stuff. Freaking out of touch liberal.
