Job applicants being asked for their FB password

Then companies should work harder at being better companies. Wouldn't they feel stupid if I turned over my login and password to them and all they found was how much I raved about how much I loved my employer and talked great about them. But then I'd have to sue them for invasion of privacy.

Yes, and this goes both ways. Howabout employees working harder at being better employees?...and former employees for that matter.

I don't believe it would 'invasion of privacy' per its classical meaning. That would be similar to an LEO showing up at your front door and asking for permission to search your home for drugs without showing a warrant...you consenting to the search and then suing the LEO for searching your home and finding nothing but framed, loving messages mounted all over the house stating how much you loved LEOs, loved all your previous LEOs, and want to date the LEO reading this now!

...,but who knows....you might win. Criminal and corporate law aren't exactly the same thing I suppose.

FB is worthless, but I side with the employers with this one. The potential employer has every right to know the background of a potential employee, and if that candidate has trashed a previous employer on the net. The employer should be allowed to take that into consideration during the hiring/rejecting process.

Should they be able to read their emails as well? Maybe their diary? Listen in on phone calls with their girlfriend?

If it's a job that requires a security clearance, I can maybe see it. But not for a regular job and they were definitely out of line in asking for his user name and password.

Why would an employer ask if you have a bank account - during an interview? Once hired, an employer might need to know if the employee has a bank account if he/she would prefer direct deposit.

If the job requires a security clearance, as do many around here, your financial background is thoroughly examined. The employer won't ask, but the background check requires your account info.

from what I hear, a fair amount of employers are doing Credit Checks these days ....... as part of a background check

which seems kinda of silly in this current economic environment

Maryland Bill Bans Employers From Facebook Passwords - Yahoo! News

If you're worried about an employer or potential employer asking for your Facebook or Twitter password, you might just want to move to Maryland. The state's General Assembly has become the first to pass a bill to keep social media passwords safe from employers.

...

Maryland State Sen. Ronald Young was instrumental in pushing the legislation. Young couldn't be reached for comment, but he told ABC News earlier this monththat he felt that such social media password practices were an "infringement on constitutional rights." Facebook's privacy officer Erin Egan has called such password requests wrong.

Wrong and illegal is exactly what it will be in Maryland as soon as the bill is signed by Gov. Martin O'Mailey.

I had my first prospective employer ask me during my interview if I have a Facebook account. Then he said, I can't ask for your password. That is correct.

I told him he could look at it if he wants, but he'd be bored to tears. My last three posts consisted of

1. A picture of my mom
2. A picture of my dinner on the grill
3. A picture of my dogs

I told him I don't air my laundry and no information about my employment is on my facebook.

I'd be curious to know his reaction when he looks me up :roflmao:
