Jesus Comforts His Disciples

John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

a. John 14:1 Or Believe in God

So... at this point Jesus knows that Judas will betray Him. He's already identified Judas and Satan has already entered Judas... So this is the last time, before the crucifixion, that Jesus will sit down with the men who have been by His side since He began His mission. These men are His family and He is putting things in order.

He knows things are going to get really bad. At this point, Jesus is a dying man. His days are numbered and the battle ahead of Him is enormous and He is fully aware of the fact that things are going to get much, much worse for Him.

Since neither He nor His Father had been through the atonement process before, He didn't fully know the horrible emotional toll it would take on Him. He had been publicly humiliated before.... His family, friends, and the temple leaders had rejected Him and He was even said to be working for Satan or insane..... so He had a clue about what emotional turmoil going to the cross was going to be like.... but He hadn't been through it... so at this point He wasn't a conqueror, but preparing for battle.

He knows how the battle will end. He knew He was going home. He knew heaven first hand since He had already been there. He had that to look forward to. He wanted to let these men know they were going there too, when their battle was over.

He also knows His followers are going to go through a horrible time. These men, after all, respect Him, admire Him, depend on Him.... they need Him to get through the day.... they have given up everything for Him. And now they are going to be left alone....

So the first four verses of John 14 are His words of encouragement.... He's saying:
  • "Don't worry.... everything's going to be ok"
  • "I'm going to go make a place ready for you"
  • "I'll be back to get you"

These are beautiful, heartbreaking, loving, powerful verses.

AMEN! :huggy: This is along the same lines as your post: <hr style="color:#e5e5cc; background-color:#e5e5cc" size="1">

Isaiah 53 may be the most specific and powerful of the prophetic passages regarding Jesus. It's true and accurate; and because of that it's both wonderful and saddening. Sweet and wonderful Jesus, Son of God, the Lamb of God, who gave all and did the impossible for you and me. He is the ultimate expression of love for a fallen people.

Because of Jesus we have hope and a future, and all the false things men concoct wither before Him. He is our strength, especially when there is no strength to be had. He is the reality which puts all other things to shame. He is the conqueror of evil, our defender and avenger.

Be mindful of Him and His glory today - really, think of Him today, and think of things in His context. He changes everything.

Now may the Lord cover you with His grace today, and may He be your strength, and may He fill you with His peace.
