This happens to my husband on Sundays (not during football season). Seems there's always some channel doing a marathon on Sunday.

"The Sons of Katie Elder" is probably my favorite John Wayne western, followed closely by True Grit.

Another favorite is "In Harm's Way".

McClintock
Hellfighters
The longest day

But I can never pass the opportunity to watch him playing Ghengis Khan in The Conqueror, it's so bad it's funny.

Growing up I think I watched every single John Wayne movie with my dad at least twice, when Hubby hunkers down on a Sunday for a marathon, I either go shopping or find some yard work. Not saying they aren't good, but I tend to talk a lot during a movie I've seen (about the movie of course).

Jebus, ask a man what his favorite Master's moment is why don't you. It would be too hard to pick a favorite John Wayne movie. For starters:

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Red River
Rio Bravo
El Dorado
North to Alaska
McClintok
The War Wagon
Hatari
The Sons of Katie Elder
The Undefeated
Chisum
Stagecoach
Rio Lobo
The Longest Day
True Grit
The Train Robbers
The Shootist
Angel and the Badman
Alamo
Rooster Cogburn
Cahill

I could probably narrow my favorite John Wayne lines down to two though:

"Just lead." From Chisum.

"The shells in here belong to him. You tell him he can come get 'em anytime." From The War Wagon.

Ditto! I, as BayKat said, also, grew up with a dad that loved John Wayne. I, like you, could never pick a fave, either. I wish Mr. Wayne, and my dad were still here. Those were the days.

Anything John Wayne. Rio Bravo and Angie Dickinson was hot as a red head, El Dorado and Rio Lobo are three of my favorites.

Horse Soldiers.

No other movie has him share so much power and influence with another actor, Holden, often to the detriment of Wayne's character. That is a level of self confidence and willingness for his character to be 'warts and all' that contrasts wonderfully with the typical 'all knowing, never wrong or even questionable, cut and dried, right and wrong' characters he normally plays.

Further, it ends with deep respect, Wayne grudgingly moving passed his hatred of doctors, and Holden acknowledging that the hard, unbending, unrelenting man also plays a critical roll. Further, the supporting characters are good, as well. Great story.

Was it Wayne's idea? I have no idea but, I would suspect it wouldn't of happened had he not wanted it to be so at that point in his career.

There are a ton of Wayne movies I can watch over and over but, there is plenty to be picked at as well, stuff that gets bothersome. Horse Soldiers never does.

It is, in my view, a masterpiece of story and characters and cinematography.

Do you know they say making this movie is what gave him cancer? It was filmed on location where the government had been dropping nuclear bombs. Howard Hughes got the location through the government for the movie for I think a dollar or some silly thing. The majority of the people that worked on the film died of cancer. They say all that gorgeous red dust that made the scenary so pretty was radioactive.
