seriously? or are you one of the bored ones tonight?

Came over the scanner. One officer just said he thinks it was juveniles; dealt w/ them last week. A boat picked them up...
Sorry...false alarm.
Bored. No. Just got home from work. Tired!

Units slow it down. Juvie, maybe jumped off for fun? Sheesh, stupid.

White Male, tanned, no shirt, shorts.

CCSO is sure spooled up though.

Seems like a "truth or dare" thing.

Yep, juvie. 30 foot jump. Not a suicide attempt or anything.

They are checking anyway, but jumper has been picked up by a boat.

Whatcha wanna bet the po-po wanna have a little talk with this particular young man.... but sounds like he is gonna get away.

Is there a specific law against jumping off bridges? I see bungee jumpers on TV all the time. Let me guess - you need a $50 permit to jump from a bridge - as long as you pay the piper, you can do whatever you want.

I do not know for sure about specific laws but, jumping off bridges for kicks can be dangerous. Unless you are the physics nerd that knows the exact height of the part of the bridge, the depth of the water, the weight of the person jumping and the resistance of the water, how would you know if this was a good thing to try? I wish the cost of this stunt was covered by a 50 dollar permit. It cost a hell of alot more in the rescue response that the jumper should have to pay.

I agree. Every idiot that wastes the time of first responders should pay restitution for their stupidity.

Why is that not the case in all these circumstances? Plane crashes on a mountain, necessary rescue...hike up in unsafe conditions and get stuck...restitution?

I think in many cases, it should apply. Don't know about the plane crash.....would probably view that as more of an accident. But as for the hiking in unsafe conditions, I've always thought they should be responsible for the costs of their rescue.

I guess my thoughts are.....if it's an accident, that's one thing. But if someone is putting other people's lives at risk due to their own stupidity, they should have to pay up. Like the 19 yr old down the road from me who shot himself in the shoulder a few months ago and had everyone searching for home invasion suspects that didn't really exist, helos and all. Pay up! :smack:

The thing that bothers me is that while all these police and medics, fire dept were rushing to the scene, a bad accident could have occured elsewhere or someone else could have been seriously injured and in dire need of help.
It has been discussed a lot on the forums about the people that abuse the system for a free ride to the hospital. Most EMT volunteers will tell you that they spend a lot of time as a taxi service because it is "free". It is really going to piss me off if I have or someone I love has; a true emergency and the medics are not available because they are giving someone a ride to the emergency room for the 3rd time that week for a headache or a stomach ache.

Yeah, hang 'em high for jumping off a 30' bridge! Dumb azzes, what the heck were they thinking?!?! Should be arrested and throw in jail!

On that same note.... anyone else jump off the 40' bridge at Skinner's Falls upstate NY?? :howdy:

That was my point, the plane crash is an accident, therefore a NECESSARY rescue. I agree with you 100%, these rescue workers, volunteer or paid are not there, risking their own lives, so idiots can get a thrill and then screw up.

The difference between what I did as a kid and perhaps what would happen to most kids today is:
If my parents knew what I was doing that I shouldn't have been doing, and I KNEW I shouldn't be doing it, I would have had my ass kicked and been grounded for a month.
If I had broken my neck, they would have dealt with it instead of suing everyone from the bridge builder to the county.
They wouldn''t have their face plastered all over the news for having a quadrapalegic kid and warning all parents about the dangers of kids jumping off bridges.
