I've lived and worked in the black community since 1970 and I had never heard of it before last week.

Everywhere I worked I was the minority (except when I worked in LaPlata). I never heard of this either, nor heard my coworkers talk about it.

Well kind of, seems to me it honors Texas finally hearing about it. The emancipation was issued on September 22, 1862, and became effective as of January 1, 1863. Juneteenth is a Texas state holiday celebrated annually of the announcement of federal orders received on June 19, 1865, proclaiming that all slaves in Texas were now free. Two years, 5 months and 18 days after the fact. Also it was two months after the war ended and Lincoln was dead.
So, another made up holiday.
