Juneteenth

Yup the White man set them free. It's called the 14th amendment. which was adopted on July 9, 1868. Maybe they should have made it part of the July 4th celebrations? Naw, not divisive enough.

Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Apparently it took two years for Texas to get the memo. And we think the mail is slow now.

Kinda funny that Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during wartime under powers granted him as president “as a fit and necessary war measure”, as well as for the purpose of enlisting those "freed" in the service of the Union Army, and yet the civil war ended April 9, 1865, which would make the Proclamation null and void after the war ended. If the Proclamation was appropriate enough to free the slaves and to be continue to be enforced after the war, then there was no need for the 14th Amendment.

I also find it weird, that the free State of Texas, a Country onto itself up to 1845 before joining the Union, would allow federal troops to march into Texas the way they did, after cessation of the civil war.

Another funny thing. At annual Lincoln Day dinners, hosted by republicans, celebrating and in remembrance of Lincoln, the very President that issued the Emancipation Proclamation, nary, or very very few, black people attend.

They attend the Jefferson Davis Banquet instead.

After all, he was a Democrat. :yay:

Even though I'm a federal worker and benefit from a holiday that is likely to go under the radar for almost everyone else in the country - I both recognize its significance - and wonder for its inclusion in the "pantheon" of federal holidays.

I still expect at some point - they're going to cancel an existing one. My bet is Columbus Day, since it goes against the grain of "wokeness" currently in vogue.

I mean, what do we have? New Year's Day, which is probably the most celebrated day worldwide.
MLK Day.
President's Day, which used to be just Washington's birthday, and it might survive being axed.

Then as an old boss declared - the "drought" - the longest gap without a holiday - until Memorial Day. Hell ought to freeze over before we cancel that.

Juneteenth, the newest one.

July 4th. In my mind, every nation should celebrate its founding, whether it's Bastille Day or Canada Day.

Labor Day. Kind of a weird one, if you ask me.

Columbus Day, and as I said, probably due to be axed.

Veteran's Day, at one time called Armistice Day. At one time celebrating the end of WW1 it honors all vets.

Thanksgiving and Christmas - holidays that basically are so ingrained in American culture, if you didn't give them the day off, people would take it anyway.

We also have Inauguration Day every four years - and that's also a concession. Downtown DC is such a mess, it's just better to keep people home.

Yeah, like Sam said, some of these federal holidays are pretty weird so I'm like...why not Juneteenth? Might as well.

They do need to find something for August, though. If they want it to be racial they could go with Obama's birthday, or the Voting Rights Act. Warren Harding's death would be a good day to celebrate. The 19A was ratified in August.

I vote we get a White Privilege Day. I am so tired of being accused of it I might as well celebrate it. Better yet, make it a whole month.

There isn't one for March or April either, and Memorial Day comes at the END of May, so it's like a 3.5 month gap from President's Day to Memorial Day.

It's ok, I really don't need another holiday. Might be nice if MARYLAND had their own holiday. Lots of states do.
