The house we're renting is in Corolla. We usually stay further south than that, but this house was too nice to pass up.

I grew up spending my summers on the Outer Banks of NC. My gram had a house in Kitty Hawk. The house is gone now thanks to one hurricane too many.

One summer (1987-- I was 16) we decided to go to Atlantic Beach. It was there that I got caught in the middle of the largest school of migrating sting ray seen there in over 50 years. I mean thousands of the suckers. BIG ones too. Just kept coming for over 30 minutes. And there me..standing in the middle of the churning water SCREAMING at the top of my lungs.

I haven't been back in the water since.
OMG! That sounds absolutely horrifying! I am scared of the ocean. I go in, but only to maybe thigh level at best. We went to Myrtle Beach once when I was a kids and it was so warm in brought in tons of Portugese Man-O-War. I got stung from my waist down and had to go to the hospital. I remember this German woman screaming and running around on the beach. She didn't speak English so she didn't understand what they were telling her to do. She had swam into a group of babies and didn't see them under the water. She had HUGE welts all over her body.

The sting ray thing was horrifying. And even though I understand that it was a total fluke, the phobia is strong and I can't get over it. And I do TRY. But I can't even put my toes in the water without feeling panic. If it's not a swimming pool, I aint a swimmin'!

Ugh. Man of Wars are nasty suckers. Ow Ow Ow!

Ow is right! A few years later we went back and my litle sister was making a little pool in the sand and a small piece of a tentacle came into the pool and stung her hand. I was carrying her back to the house and she was screaming and flailing around. She hit my face and stung me too. Those things are nasty for sure. We always bring baking soda to the beach now to neutralize the acid just incase.

I'm sorry, but the visual of you carrying your screaming flailing sister and her slapping you in the face is just too funny. :lmao:

Yeah. They can keep the ocean and it's many creatures. I'll sit up on the sand or by the pool, soak up the sun and just relax!

That is crazy! :yikes: I practically grew up in the ocean and had never even seen a jelly fish until last year. and the only portugese man of war I've seen is on TV. :jet:

The thing about them is that they are very pretty. The one that got me was a beautiful lavendar color and I thought it was tissue paper. I was only 5 so I guess the reality that tissue paper would never float on top of the ocean didn't occur to me. I poked it a couple times and then it felt like my body went to sleep from the waist down. It was tingly. Then.....the sting set in. Felt like me body was on fire. Litterally. I had a raft around my waist and my dad pulled it off down my legs and that broke the tentacles thank God. The one thet got my sister was a pretty peach color.

They are beautiful. But soooooooooo nasty. I've never seen them on the east coast, but did see a bunch when we were in Hawaii.

I'm not a big fan of swimming in the Atlantic, I need water that I can see clearly to the bottom. I'm a big chicken, I'll go in up to my knees but that's about it.

My parents just bought a house in Nags Head, NC. We usually do a big family vacation, but this year everyone is just migrating down there. Not sure if hubby and I will go, our only planned trip is to Southern Maryland Hospital Center, to have our daughter in June. Our first baby, so not planning on traveling too much.

All of your vacations sound wonderful!!! I love the beach.
