I just moved to southern maryland becuase of a teaching job in st. mary's county. i really do not know a lot about the area and was wondering if someone could tell me a little bit about it and what all there is to do here. From what i have heard from the staff at school there isnt much to do here but there is a lot to do around this area. Anyone have any good places where i can go and meet people? Let me know!

If you are into drinking beer, playing softball, or driving a pickup truck this place is totally for you (just kidding as you must hear the song "Smibbville USA") to get the full gist of my comment).

I think if you placed your interests out here someone could probably tell you the closest place around for doing it. Being only an hour or so from DC makes a lot accessible, albeit not necessarily convenient. To just meet people I would say the local watering holes (some might scare you from their outward appearance, but for the most part the people are friendly).

Welcome aboard!

Things to do/places to go:

St. Mary's City
Point Lookout
Calvert Marine Museum (Also the boat tours that operate from there)
Cove Point (Might be the wrong name - it's a park near Calvert Cliffs)
Sotterly Plantation
St. Mary's College (music series, art displays, and plays)
Boat tours out to Smith Island
Annapolis (old town area)
Maryland International Raceway and Budd's Creek Raceway
The museum at Colton's Point

Also, you could get a fishing license and do some fishing or crabbing (the Tackle Box on Rte. 235 can fix you up and recommend places to fish)

Also, you could get a kayak or a small boat and explore the St. Mary's River.

Other than that, this is a good area to develop some hobbies like arts and crafts, sewing, and the like.

My last duty station was in Hawaii and I used to here the same thing there. :loser:
The Dept. of Parks an Rec has a web site listing their programs. The Calvert Marine Museum has concerts during the summer and the local paper, fondly reffered to as the Emptyprise, lists community activities.
