Just When I Start Trusting WalMart

They have to do something to screw it up! I read an article last week that described how Wal Mart had been able to keep it's food prices steady, or even lower, by forcing suppliers to use smarter packaging strategies. The article mentioned things like cereal boxes that are never filled to the top since the weight of the product isn't enough to fill the box that size, and the cereal makers want a bigger box to have a better shelf presence. Wal Mart is directing suppliers to use smaller packaging, with more product and less air, which requires less space and weight to transport and results in lower costs. And in return, Wal Mart will ensure that suppliers do not lose any shelf real estate with the smaller boxes. Seems like a great plan right?

Yesterday I go to WalMart and went to buy some pasta. I always use the store brand bowtie pasta to make spaghetti. I saw that the boxes were smaller, and the price was the same it always has been, so the plan must be working. I go home, make the spaghetti, and suddenly there's not enough for everyone. How can this be? I look at the box and see why. The box is smaller, and looks exactly like it always has, except for the weight. It no longers says 16 ounces, but 12 ounces! Who sells 12 ounces of pasta? It's always been sold as 8, 16, or 32 ounces. So WalMart didn't just reduce the size of the box, they reduced the contents by 25 percent and kept the price the same.

I saw this same thing last year when Wal Mart quietly took all the 5-pound bags of sugar off the shelf and replaced them with 4-lb bags at the same price as the 5-pound. After people complained they went back to selling 5-pounds, but I wonder what else those sneaky folks are getting away with.

I noticed that last time I bought a box of cereal from them. It was noticeably smaller on the shelf next to an open box. I checked the weight and it was about 4 ounces less, figured that was where the cost savings came in.
Also quit buying cereal at Wally Mart.

It's been all over the news this week on how most packaging sizes have stayed the same but the content has been reduced in weight. Now thats deceptive. :buttkick:

I bought some Edy's Ice Cream on sale the other week at another store and realized their "half gallons" were now 1.5 quarts.

Walmart is great at bullying suppliers for lower prices. What is the supplier going to do? Risk losing the Walmart account because of a price squabble? That's why independent stores can't come close to competing to Walmart's prices.

It's the ol' "consumer beware". Yeah, it's a pain to check little things like that all of the time. I've taken to checking the unit price. If the box looks the same and the unit price is up, suspect a change.....

I am so very blessed
I love Wal-Mart.

So what if packaging is shrinking? With their prices, I can just pick up two packages of 'sketti instead of one, or two whatever else they might be selling.

Easy, peasy. :yay:

Obama was just on TV talking about this and said "I will not only give you the 4 ounces back but I will pass a law that give you 2 extra ounces of pasta! That's right 18 ounce box of bow tie pasta instead of the old 16 ounce. I will not let George Bush, John McCain and the rest of those corporate greed mongers screw you out of your bow tie!"

The exact same thing with Bryers....

That's why I'm only getting the store brands even if they're not on sale. Most are still the full half gallon. I prefer the el cheapo strawberry ice cream anyways.

Really have to pay attention to package sizes no matter where you shop anymore. Manufactuers have been quietly downsizing things for a while now. Guess it's no surprise that Wal-Mart would push for more of it to make prices seem artificially low.

I always look at the weight content of the box/package. I got one of those fancy frozen family meal things, said there were 2 servings in there at 350 calories each - great! I'll eat part of it and put the rest in a bin to have for lunch the next day.

However, there was only 10 oz of food in the whole package. And that is ONE meal at 700 calories.

Funny, I think that everytime I look at a candy bar. I think back to my days as a kid, and remember getting Ring Dings for 10 cents. And these weren't the little mini Ring Dings, these were 4 inches across. I was so upset when they went from 10 to 12 cents....

Although I love bashing Wal*Mart I have to say that this is happening everywhere.

I wouldn't say that its the company per se' as its the factories getting smart. Even at the local grocery stores, its either the price of the product going up in price or the product decreasing in size. Energy prices affect everything.

it's not walmart's fault, it's the economy. this is happening with everything.

businesses are feeling the pinch with everything and they have to do what they can to continue making a profit. so they either could have raised the price on the same size or.... keep the same price and shrink the product
